Remarkable numbers of civilians leaving ISIS-held Baghouz in recent days. @theIRC says around 1,000 arrived earlier today at the already-packed al-Hol camp. In addition, 3,500 arrived Monday, 6,000 over the weekend. washingtonpost.com/world/as-the-b…
The scale of the influx has meant that 2,000 are currently having to sleep rough in an arrivals area while they await security screening. The conditions we saw there were dire - families sleeping on concrete floors amid a thick stench of sickness and defecation.
A couple of photos from the Al-Hol camp. Management staff are stretched to breaking point, and the flow of civilians exiting ISIS-held Baghouz is overwhelming them on a daily basis.
According to @theIRC figures, around 80 children have now died on the journey to, or upon arrival at the camp — most were less than a year old. This death certificate from a nearby hospital puts 8 month old Omar’s cause of death as pneumonia.

Although conditions are desperate, the problem is not new. In fact, it happens every year, driving refugees deeper into cycles of impoverishment as international funding dries up and Lebanese government increases pressure on them to go home. /3

@FCarboniICRC was there last week. We asked him to tell us about what he saw.

It’s horrifying. Thread.
“While walking a bundle on the ground caught my eye. I thought it was trash. But no: It was blankets intertwined with two babies 4-5 months old. Just left there. People walking all around them.
The Al Hol transit area is an apocalyptic scene. These people spent months under bombardment. You see people dying, screaming kids with open wounds, people who’ve eaten very little for months.

The stench is strong, indescribable.

Preparations appear to be underway for a pro-#Assad offensive on #Idlib.

12hrs of on/off air & artillery strikes vs. southeastern & western #Idlib & northern #Hama - see marks on map (original by @ETANA_Syria + my additions).

+ multiple large pro-regime convoys moving north.
