2019 may go into history as the year when a new paradigm of global politics saw its breakthrough, the competition of great powers -- with the US and China at the center. /1
Similar to 1947 when the Cold War started, with the US and the Soviet Union at its center. And 1989 when "liberal order" (the intra-Western system of the Cold War) became the new paradigm, centered around the US. /2
Russia and Europe both sit uncomfortably with the new paradigm. Russia because the new paradigm confirms its decline (and its degradation vis-à-vis China), much to the chagrin of an elite that wants the country to stay a world power. /3
And European powers fear their continent becomes a mere playground of great power competition, which would destroy the liberal order they have built in the last decades. Question for them is how to keep this order intact and remain relevant in the new geopolitical environment. /4
