Librarians- now might be a good time to review our collections on Islam and make certain our libraries are not contributing to the mentality that inspires Islamophobic hate crimes and white supremacist terror in our own communities. #LibrariesAreNotNeutral
For the record, I just reviewed the collection in one of the libraries where I currently work and immediately found a book of explicitly Islamophobic far-right propaganda. We looked into it and found a previous librarian (who left before I arrived) purchased it.
This was the same person who also added a book by a notorious transmisogynist to the collection that I found last week while weeding old books on sex work. I'm now realizing I need to go through our entire collection searching for other hateful misinformation disguised as fact.
Our collections are only as responsible and accurate as the librarians weeding them. As information professionals we owe our communities accurate, adequate, factual nonfiction. In a time of open fascistic propaganda taking hold, our responsibility to discern misinfo is paramount.
