Assumption is that Labour front bench will vote against - and the government must know this - but that implies a clear choice on their part. /2
If the House rejects MV3 Withdrawal Agreement only, then it must face up to fact that (in absence of 'no deal') it is also voting for

a) Long Extensoin
b) European Elections. /3
So in that sense, it concentrates minds on the choice that is hurtling down the tracks.

And lays the political cover for a long extension. /4
It also throws the UK on the mercy of the European Council which will need to grant an extension without much of a clue what happens next.

One more gambit to try and make Parliament confront it's choices. /5
Assuming the Withdrawal Agreement doesn't pass on its own - unlikely, since DUP will not back (since it contains Irish Backstop that defines the future) and Opposition factions are holding out for varying flavours of soft/Brexit route to People's Vote.
