It's telling Matt Taibbi considers hurting Putin's feelings, the possibility of the US opposing him on Syria and Ukraine, and rooting out corruption and safeguarding US elections to be more harmful than Bush's conspiracy which led to hundreds of thousands of deaths in Iraq.
As a matter of fact, the only real increase in censorship since 2016 has been against LGBT folks, sex workers, et al. due to SESTA / FOSTA, although I suppose Taibbi is mad that white supremacists are slightly less welcome on social media than they used to be. Boo-hoo.
"Reigniting Cold War tensions" is also such a non-sequitur in a world where Russia unilaterally violated its agreement to protect Ukraine's territorial integrity under the Budapest Memorandum and has backed a genocidal dictator as a matter of geopolitical convenience.
In any case, Taibbi is playing dumb by pretending the Russia situation is a non-entity considering how much we've known about its hacking, finance, and disinformation campaigns, as well as its backroom deals with Trump and campaign staffers, since at least the middle of 2016.
The salacious details have been out there for some time, and were it anyone but Trump and Russia, Taibbi would have piled on and demanded resignations, indictments, and impeachment long ago. Had it been Hillary Clinton, he would have literally called for her head.
