This does, however, touch on something I've noticed about GOP ideology. Republicans seem to think it's the govt's job to give people the *pride* of having earned health care, job security, money, education, what have you — even if it means fewer people actually have these things.
There's this weird axiom in Republican thinking, backed by no social science or empirical evidence whatsoever, that the government giving something to people erases people's pride in having it, which means no one will work for anything.

It's in everything they do.
But what's telling is that GOP ideology is silent on whether structural inequality that gives people something for nothing erases pride and work ethic.

The same people who want work rules for Medicaid lose their minds about an estate tax, for instance.
Republicans are also hostile to certain people who want to work and earn their way to a better life, like immigrants. (Yes, Republicans often claim they only oppose immigrants who are a public charge, but their actual policy doesn't discriminate based on that.)
So it really seems like this whole ideology of the government protecting your right to take pride in earning what you have is just a convenient cover for Republicans' much harder-to-sell belief that some people just inherently deserve more than others.
