#SDSS2019 @gdequeiroz do people need to be on Twitter to be a part of #datascience community? How do we include people who are not on twitter?
#SDSS2019 @AmeliaMN joined twitter one day apart of first opening #rstats. She encourages people to at least open a twitter account and follow people.
#SDSS2019 @dataandme ecosystem of spaces approach: different fora that exist are good for different types of interactions -- think @StackOverflow @StackStats; @RStudio created an online community; there are people who actively contribute to @GitHub
#SDSS2019 @dataandme people often choose one place to contribute to actively, and may not be active in any other space.
#SDSS2019 @amcasari reports that Google has ecosystem teams to engage users and developers globally, especially to recognize the cultural differences from the U.S. -- the second largest development group is in Nigeria
#SDSS2019 @amcasari we give tools and resources for the local organizers to help develop their communities
#SDSS2019 @MmMiguelmM a lot of people who are not on twitter have good, valid reasons not to be on twitter. @StackOverflow, @SlackHQ channels are also good alternatives for professional development.
#SDSS2019 @amcasari attention grab is a very valid reason, and other spaces don't have that problem. @dataandme turns off notifications from twitter; she also directs people to the media that is more suited for the question -- e.g. debugging is way better on SO
#SDSS2019 @gdequeiroz one of the issue with twitter is exposure -- people don't want to be active and expose themselves and end up being attacked by trolls. But that comes with a price...
#SDSS2019 @gdequeiroz ... people who are not on Twitter kinda missed the sexual assault story with DatаСаmp, so the referrals had to be made to external material (cc: @noamross @EngelhardtCR)
#SDSS2019 @amcasari as much as we try to spread information digitally, people still have different access to information. While you may think, "I already said this a couple of times on Twitter" -- even on that media, it has disappeared from everybody's feed by now.
#SDSS2019 @dataandme I cannot tell you how many tweets I do not send. I need to take time to think things through, especially when they are controversial and sensitive.
#SDSS2019 @MmMiguelmM DatаСаmp is an example of a call for us to bring information from twitterverse to human discussions and reaching out with what we know to other people by other channels
#SDSS2019 @amcasari some of these events lead to developments and enhancements in codes of conduct. We want to improve things for the whole community; besides the code of conduct though, we need to develop enforcement, mediation and follow-up actions
#SDSS2019 @amcasari we also need to have the ways for forgiveness, and ways to move on in both virtual and real life
#SDSS2019 @gdequeiroz shifts gears to the questions asked on slido -- what do we need/want to train junior data scientists for?
#SDSS2019 @AmeliaMN shares her experiences at @SmithCollegeSDS -- many graduates were shocked to discover that physics or coding were male dominated fields, because all of their classmates so far were women
#SDSS2019 @dataandme even though I am not a prof, I do get asked for advice -- there are lessons that people have learned for you, and you personally don't have to repeat all of them.
#SDSS2019 @dataandme interviewing for a data scientist position, for instance, has a lot of resources. Sometimes you get info from the job listing. Sometimes you can get insights from people in the company -- or from people who left the company.
#SDSS2019 in his hiring for #datascientist positions @MmMiguelmM looks for a few things. 1. someone who can do science -- hard to find out from resumes if people have scientific mindset; 2. figure out how these people learn; 3. how people work in collaboration
#SDSS2019 @amcasari the gaps between academia and industry do exist, but a major part of that gap is managerial -- shame on all gatekeepers and barrier builders (👏 in audience)
#SDSS2019 @amcasari if the HR screener is that based on experience, it makes no sense these days when we now have educational programs, from formal MSc down to MOOCs and bootcamps in #datascience. Hire for growth potential, not (only) on experience.
#SDSS2019 @amcasari #datascience work is also regionalized -- if you come to Bay Area with your ML work done on East Coast or abroad, it may not get recognized.
#SDSS2019 @amcasari students/graduates: when talking with an HR / hiring manager, ask explicitly if they are hiring for experience or for potential. Don't waste your time. Find a mentor to discuss job offers and negotiation process.
#SDSS2019 @AmeliaMN if you want to have diverse teams, you need to hire for that intentionally; that oftentimes starts with writing job descriptions in a way that does not alienate marginalized groups (@bearloga had blog posts converted to @AmStatNews columns on that)
#SDSS2019 @gdequeiroz job search is a roller coaster; you will get rejected a lot, and there is nothing wrong with you -- it is the process; @amcasari companies look for a fit to their teams and processes, and if the fit is poor, you will simply be miserable in that workplace
#SDSS2019 @amcasari one of the best signals I got was when an interviewer closed the interview with "Great talking to you, I now need to end the call and go back to my 4 months old" 👩‍👩‍👧 (cc: @heatherklus)
#SDSS2019 @gdequeiroz any red flags that job seekers need to be aware of? @MmMiguelmM not a red flag per se, but one needs to understand their own expectation of the work environment, and seek out the information regarding the environment to see if it is a good fit
#SDSS2019 @amcasari the first question I ask back when I am invited to is, "what keeps you here?" -- this is a competitive industry, most people can go anywhere else. Do they even feel comfortable answering that, or just give a plain organizational response?
#SDSS2019 @dataandme's question is, "What are your greatest concerns about me?" -- it's going to tell you a lot about the person you are talking with, and will reveal a fair amount about your future interactions.
#SDSS2019 @AmeliaMN think very carefully about jobs that have infinite beer kegs, or don't have an HR. @amcasari if they have infinite vacation, follow up with, "How often people on your team take that?"
