I am not a Conservative and I never thought I would say this but I miss what the Conservative party used to be. I miss its patriotism & pragmatism corroded by Brexit. 👇

I have always voted for progressive left of centre parties rather than the Tories but there was something reassuring that if the other side won at least conservatives who would put the country first even if I disagreed with domestic policies but now they represent a danger to UK.
The obvious damage that Brexit will do and is doing now to our economy will weaken us in every respect including our defence capability and international standing in the world. I cannot understand why Conservative MPs & party members would harm our country in this recklessness.

What is apparent is that the Conservative party no longer represents the middleground of pragmatic politics they want to claimed to represent. They have lost their way. An alien disruptive force has been incubated within the Tory party and will destroy them from within. Brexit.

This is a disgrace. ‘The number of people formally dealt with by the criminal justice system fell last year to the lowest level since 1970 despite police figures showing a six per cent rise in offending.’ Crime up but cases down to 50 year low!

How badly are the public being served? Something very wrong in a system whereby rising crime coexists with a falling caseload in the courts. There is tumbleweed blowing through some courts & yet the public know crime is on the increase. Why is HMG not being held to account?
From a legal practitioners point of view a great deal of this scandal is due to people being remanded under investigation indefinitely. With no bail return date & few serious follow-up investigations even when directed by the CPS. You get frontloaded activity and then nothing.

A painful reminder of the disaster that was Grayling whilst at the MOJ. If the legal profession have not stood up to him he would have abolished client choice of legal representation & imposed other bizarre unsustainable changes but never held accountable

I was very proud to be in a leadership role along with Bill Waddington @bill_wow, Jon Black @jonblackbsb Michael Turner QC of @TheCriminalBar. Together & unified the profession showed how to fight Grayling to avoid a disaster like the probation service. Is there a lesson here?
And a lesson not so much for the leadership of professional bodies but the membership about the value of unity in the face of adversity. About the need to support rather than betray colleagues by selfishly failing to support. For one brief shining moment unity prevailed & we won.

Why it is nonsense to suggest the EU is a “dictatorship“. It is not because:

1. We have vetoes and opt outs

2. EU commission drafts, enforces and monitors EU laws. But it does not pass laws. It’s a civil service answerable to EU governments.

And 👇
3. The EU trade commissioner negotiates on a mandate drawn up by EU member states.

4. The commission cannot foist laws upon EU member states.

5. EU laws are agreed by: a)the council of ministers, comprising ministers from 28 EU and b) governments and the European parliament.&
6. sensitive policies, including tax, defence and foreign policy, have to be agreed by unanimity.

7. LSE research found that The UK is on the winning side 87% of the time.

So. Tomorrow the House of Commons will vote on a series of possible amendments to Theresa May's 'Plan B' - or rather the 'plan of action to achieve a Plan B' - which itself officially reads as follows:
The amendment most likely to pass – and therefore the one on which most attention has been paid – is this one from Conservative party chairman Sir Graham Brady. It's effectively an instruction to go back and seek *some unstated other way* to avoid a hard border in Ireland:
Tonight, Theresa May has asked her backbenchers to vote in favour of this amendment. She is basically asking them to tie her hands, so that Brussels will clearly know what it would take to win the Commons' backing for any deal.

Here are some of the key findings from the report in slide form.
First an overview of the study itself:
Rich qualitative data (online survey & focus groups) gathered across the Central Border Region. Detailed examples & viewpoints heard from people on both sides of #border.

Respondents to the survey came from across the 8 local authority areas of the Central Border Region, moreorless equally from both sides of the border. 50/50 male/female. 80% 31-65 yrs.
There were far fewer Leave-voting respondents so they got extra attention in our analysis.

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
