First Nicola Sturgeon, now Welsh first minister @MarkDrakeford has been denied FCO help for his visit to Brussels.
He is here today "under our own steam" to meet Michel Barnier and other officials.
@MarkDrakeford He says: "I never come to Brussels in order to criticise the UK government, I come to put the Welsh government's position."
"Sometimes there will be differences [of opinion]... In Brussels nobody ever thinks that is strange."
FCO get in touch to say Welsh first minister was not denied help. “On this occasion the Wesh govt has decided to manage the visit without FCO support. We look forward to working together on future visits to help further objectives for all parts of the UK.”

Meanwhile... Michel Barnier met Stephen Barclay yesterday and once again rejected the British gov request to ringfence citizens' rights part of the Brexit agreement.

The EU remains absolutely firm that it will not reopen the withdrawal agreement.
The British government hopes to convince the EU to change its mind, by stressing no-deal impact, esp on Ireland.

“I think a no-deal outcome would be very damaging for Ireland,”

@joncstone While Johnson and Hunt are arguing about whether optimism v entrepreneurship will win the day, the EU refers back to the legal text that the British gov has already agreed to.

The extension deal from April *rules out* further negotiations.

Jeremy Hunt defends comparing the EU to the Soviet Union. Incredible.
On narrow point of fact: simply not correct the EU is making it impossible for the UK to leave. Some days, some EU diplomats wd be glad if UK got on and did actually leave.
I know this is a leadership contest, but way too much stress on personality to fix Brexit.

The EU is a system of laws. It's not going to tear them all up because next PM is "tougher" or "not going to blink" whatever that means.

Poland and Czech Republic blocking any hint of 2050 net zero carbon target - even this watered down version 🔽

Viktor Orbán has joined blocking group - Hungary had previously suggested it may support council conclusions that wd move EU in the direction of 2050 net zero carbon emissions.
The current para 2 in council conclusions could be dropped completely.... but re-emerge as statement by the majority of member states.

In 2002 Mikael Dugge Engström, the founder, CEO and Brew Master of Dugges Bryggeri, had a meeting with an Englishman. What was said at the meeting has long since been forgotten. What was said at the following pub visit is why we are here today.
The Englishman told Mikael that he was in the business of selling filters used for brewing beer and that he and an associate were in the business of selling second hand breweries. This got Mikael thinking. How cool wouldn’t it be to have your own brewery and brew your own beer?

An EU source tells me that today's #Barnier #Brexit op-ed does not signal any shift in the EU position or offer anything new to the UK. They said reflects what has been said on previous occasions by Mr Barnier and that he had "nothing concrete in mind".
Asked about the timing, the source said the #Barnier #Brexit piece targetted the 26 EU member states other than the UK and Ireland & was "an exercise in bringing all other member states up to speed on the state of play" and "was not drafted in any way to signal a change".
EU source re. #Brexit #Barnier "We're saying we aren't intransigent, we're willing to listen, we'll consider innovative solutions w. in the clear legal limits. But if [UK] is not flexible...there's no room for flexibility".
