Speech by @akk, frontrunner to follow Merkel, had three remarkable aspects: a commitment to Israel's security; a call for higher German defense spending; and, most interesting, a call to put liberal democracy at the center of German foreign policy.
In her speech in Israel @akk said (in German) that „together we must stand up for everywhere in the world“ for liberal democracy, and that „constructive and like-minded states“ that share democratic values „must cooperate closely for this globally“, "more closely" than up to now.
A clear rebuff of the currently fashionable "realist" approach to foreign policy: the view that only power matters, and that global politics is a shark tank in which every country needs to push hard for its interests. Instead @akk wants to strengthen liberal order globally.
