People are taking issue with my use of “Soviet“ to describe the Trump speech. (👉 @JayCaruso). I spent years studying the Soviet state, including listening to all of their speeches. Military glory was a staple of their claim to legitimacy. It permeated everything. /1
Americans glorify their heroes, yes. As we should. But we don’t usually have the president tell us war stories as the foundation of marking our independence. There’s a reason Veterans Day is a separate holiday. /2
Having the minister of defense and the chief of the general staff flank you while you recount tales of military glory is very, very Soviet. Take it from an expert. /3
