President Trump's lawyers are making some pretty aggressive arguments to the D.C. Cir. this morning about Congress' power to investigate him. Among other things, his lawyer says Congress has zero authority to act on conflicts of interest by a president.
Trump's lawyer also says the House Oversight Committee has no oversight authority over the president.
The panel seems somewhat skeptical of Trump's more maximalist arguments. They've been questioning his lawyer for almost an hour now, well past the 30-minute time allotted for his side of the argument.
President Trump's lawyer told the D.C. Cir. that Congress cannot, under its legislative powers, investigate corruption by a president.
"We took you way over your time."
The panel also has some pretty sharp questions for the House's lawyer, focusing on the power of a committee to investigate the president and whether the records it's seeking are really relevant to some of its stated purposes.
Letter also has some congressional-maximalist arguments, including that federal courts don't have the power to review the House's decision to delegate some authority to committees.
