There has been a significant increase in distribution of misogynistic hate online - including the rise of the “manosphere,” r/forums, YouTube channels, gamergate, twitter and Facebook communities and since 2018, first two explicit male supremacy groups are being tracked by SPLC.
Rape threats and death threats online are not uncommon. Belittlement, swarming, berating, and ongoing harassment are every day. When you bring it up, men tell you you’re lying for attention or that you brought it on yourself, you’re pathetic, and “it’s just a joke.”
They tell you if you don’t use your real name nothing you say is believable or credible. But when, like me, your personal info is published without your consent and you get targeted harassment at your personal address, they tell you that’s just the cost of having an opinion.
It’s the cost of existing. If you are a woman who does anything more than float silently in the ether, you will be attacked. At some point someone will remind you to shut the fuck up. Sometimes, if you don’t respond how you ought to, they will systematically dismantle your life.
They’ll stalk you for months or years. They’ll reach out to people online or in your real life and tell them lies about you, try to turn them against you. They’ll post horrible smears. They’ll try to get you fired from your job. And sometimes, they’ll track you down and kill you.
So no, it’s not getting better.
