How do climate-related tweets containing YouTube videos stack up as a reliable source of information on climate change? Let's find out. . .

@ZellaQuixote We downloaded all tweets posted in the last ten days containing the word "climate" and linking to YouTube, resulting in 9049 tweets from 6865 accounts. 9% of the traffic (816 tweets) appears to be automated.
@ZellaQuixote Here are the 25 YouTube videos most frequently linked from recent tweets containing "climate". Many of the most popular either outright promote climate change denial or feature uncritical interviews with prominent deniers (indicated by orange text.)
@ZellaQuixote Overall, nearly half of the traffic (48.3%) links to videos expressing the view that anthropogenic climate change is either an outright fabrication, of minimal impact, or a good thing for humanity. Needless to say, this ratio does not reflect the scientific consensus.

Both #DemDebate and #DemocraticDebate trended immediately prior to, during, and after the first night of the July Democratic presidential debates. We performed some comparative analysis of the traffic mentioning each candidate.

@ZellaQuixote Which candidates received the most discussion? Warren and Sanders topped the list, followed by Buttigieg and Williamson. We included tweets containing the candidates first name, last name, or Twitter account, excluding common first names that introduced ambiguity.
@ZellaQuixote Next, we performed sentiment analysis on the traffic mentioning each candidate. Overall, the average sentiment scores were higher during the first half of the debate than the second, with John Delaney experiencing the most drastic reduction.

In the aftermath of the #Gilroy garlic festival shooting, we tracked the various themes and narratives as they spread and morphed on Twitter. As is often the case, people rushing to post mis- and disinformation was not helpful.

@ZellaQuixote Despite lack of information, people tweeted a variety of claims as events unfolded. Some examples:

- shooter's age (20s? 30s?)
- shooter was a Trump supporter
- shooting was racially motivated
- two shooters
- distraction from something more nefarious (#FalseFlag)
@ZellaQuixote The discovery of the shooter's apparent Instagram page fueled further speculation. References to "Might is Right" (which does promote Anglo-Saxon supremacy) was used to support claims of a white supremacist motive, while an Iranian flag was presented as evidence to the contrary.

Earlier today, a group of eight remarkably similar aphorism-peddling accounts (@LoisyHogan, @MayyMack, @LenaAcree, @kristi_walston, @SandrMaxwell, @peggy_jamison, @BecccaPowell, and @JudithChapmn) followed one or both of us. Something sure looks familiar. . .

Only one of our new examples (@LenaAcree) turned up in our original analysis, so we definitely missed some and appreciate an opportunity to round out the set.

The CNN article is a bit wonky on its timeline, but the official sources peg the changes we “might” see, at 600-800 years out.

And again, it’s all hypothetical, AND, that is only IF a worst-case plays out.

Fun Fact 2: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is almost ALWAYS targeted by environmentalists as “evil.”

CO2 is a by-product of combustion engines.

First, where did Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan plan come from? (George Soros, perhaps? Foreign-funded radicals?) No. It came from Albertans. A volunteer panel led by @andrew_leach spoke w 1K residents in-person and heard from 25K+ online. 2/24
The panel also engaged with 350+ stakeholders and met w Aboriginal Peoples in three cities, and received hundreds of detailed submissions from NGOs, industry groups and others. 3/24

THREAD| Draft of the #Climate Change Act, presented by (@bmu) this week: The proposal is a framework law, featuring elements from international acts, e.g. from UK (@theCCCuk). In contrast to the German Climate Action Plan 2050, it will be legally binding. #Klimaschutzgesetz
2| The framework law includes emission reduction targets, defines CO2 budgets for each sector, and clarifies responsibilities, as well as review, transparency & sanctioning mechanisms. Implementation measures for each sector will be detailled in 2030 programmes, due in Mar 2019.
3| Progress will be supported by an independent advisory group of 7 experts. Focus is on reaching the 2030 CO2 reduction targets, but the draft works towards at least 95% reduction by 2050. The remaining 5% to reach #netzero could be reached through compensation policies.

Good questions @RedsforNamesake. If confronting #climate change is your priority, it is imperative to ramp up carbon-free energy asap.

1. NJ will now ramp up renewable energy from 13% in 2017 and 20% by 2020 under old RPS to 35% by 2025 & 50% by 2030. Impressive leadership.
2. To ensure that this new clean energy replaces fossil fuels and contributes to #climate mitigation goals, NJ's new laws also make payments to ensure the continued operation of 3 South Jersey nuclear reactors that currently supply 31% of the state's electricity consumption.
2. Cont.: That measure is essential and ensures that nearly all of the new clean energy growth over the next 12 years builds on top of the fossil-free foundation provided by the state's existing nuclear plants.
