Here's a story about the Canadian Military clearing unexploded munitions from the seabed around Canada - bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-…
Contrast that with the UK Government who dumped a load of weapons into the sea - independent.co.uk/news/tons-of-a…
and that included chemical weapons - naturphilosophie.co.uk/what-lies-bene…
I asked about the biggest of the marine dumps that the MoD used (Beaufort Dyke), just about how the thing was monitored. The answer was that they don't bother monitoring it - Image
so I asked what records were held about what chemical weapons were dumped in the seas off our coasts and the answer was that htey didn't keep much in the way of records (none at all after 1989) and what they did have was destroyed or transferred to the archives Image
I got exactly the same answer to my questions about explosives dumped there (I asked both questions at the same time and the MoD 'grouped' them to give the same answer). So we don't know what's down there Image
I also asked about monitoring the radiation levels at Hurd Deep (off Alderney) and I was told that there was no monitoring of that site Image
but I kept asking and when I got a Minister to reply in the Chamber of the House of Commons the answer was a bit different - theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=2019…
She told me that the UK 'regularly monitors the Channel Island states' and reports the results Image
and she told me that the North East Atlantic dump site was monitored, too - Image
but we return to the MoD's answers about dump sites around our coast and the fact that there is no monitoring of the explosives and there is no monitoring of the chemical weapons dumped there over many years - Image
It also turns out that the reason the Hurd Deep is monitored is because the UK was caught lying about what had been dumped down there - independent.co.uk/news/plutonium…
If the Canadians can clean up the seas around their coastline wherever ships were sunk, surely it's not too much to ask of the MoD to start cleaning up the mess that it's made by dumping so much around our coasts? Surely the marine environment deserves that? It won't be easy
The hardest bit might actually be getting the MoD to admit that it bears some responsibility. It took an age to get it to accept responsibility for Dalgety Bay and work on clearing that up won't be finished for another couple of years - Image
So, I'll keep the pressure up and I'll keep calling for an MoD #EnvironmentalAudit and I'll keep calling for the MoD to take full responsibility and undertake a #MarineCleanUp operation for all of our sakes
