Watching @BernieSanders at @NABJ and am so reminded of why I’m here. He’s in rare form. The audience is with him. (Much more than the panelists).
@fivefifths asked Bernie a question about racism as a predictor of the maternal mortality, implying Medicare for all isn’t enough. It’s not. But in lieu of “curing racism” it’s important to note that he SINGLE BIGGEST predictor of the maternal mortality gap is poverty.
Black women aren’t receiving prenatal care or preventative care for other diseases which effect pregnancy outcomes, like diabetes. (20% of Black Americans over 20 have diabetes — half are undiagnosed.)
The other thing we can do, which Bernie discussed, was to support HBCUS which graduate a disproportionate number of black doctors. We need more people who look like us serving us. But we also just need black ppl to have health care.
