NEW: A Mississippi venue allegedly cancelled a couple's wedding plans after discovering the couple was a black man + a white woman.

"We don’t do gay weddings or mixed race, because of our Christian race—I mean, our Christian belief," a woman says.

I called the wedding venue today to find out why they cancelled the wedding for the interracial couple. A man answered. I told him why he was calling and if refusing interracial couples really is their policy.

"No comment," he said, quickly hanging up.

IMPORTANT: This comes after the MS Legislature passed & Gov. @PhilBryantMS signed 2 "religious freedom" laws—#SB2681 in 2014 & #HB1523 in 2016—making it easier for businesses to discriminate against LGBT people. #MSleg

Supporters said they wouldn't affect interracial couples.
It may be the case that, under Mississippi law, this wedding venue does have the right to discriminate against LGBT couples, but not interracial couples (which is banned by federal law).

The Booneville Main Street Association has released a statement after a local venue refused an interracial couple:

“We do not discriminate based on race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender. We are working hard to move Booneville in a positive direction & to grow out city!”
No details, but I do know that the NAACP is now looking into this.

MS Attorney General (& Dem nom for governor) Jim Hood shared letters dating back to 2013 in which he warned Lt. Gov. (& GOP nom for gov) @TateReeves about the state’s mental crisis & that it could spark a federal lawsuit. MS lost that lawsuit yesterday.

In a 2013 letter, @HoodForGovernor wrote to @TateReeves that he was “gravely concerned about potential litigation by the” DOJ & that MS wasn’t complying w the 1999 SCOTUS #Olmstead ruling on mental illness/civil rights.

A US judge yesterday pointed to the case & ruled against MS
In the letters dating from 2013-2019, Hood repeatedly asked Reeves and the Legislature to use millions he won to fund mental health.

Instead Reeves & #MSLeg cut corporate taxes & then cut funds for mental heath, including nearly 600 MH jobs & 650 beds.

Boris Johnson just lost his vote, his majority, and soon maybe even his residence at Number 10, but folks are still clinging to “Yeah but Theresa May was *uniquely* awful.”

Why is it men can just be plain “awful” (& get a pass anyway), but women are always “uniquely awful”? 🤔
People insisted on describing Hillary Clinton as “uniquely awful” to explain 2016, too, partly to avoid dealing with the misogyny that colored so much of 2016. No, it wasn’t misogyny—she was just “uniquely” awful.

Women are just all uniquely bad, I guess.
This isn’t a defense of Theresa May, btw, and I’m not taking a position on whether or not she was awful.

It’s the “uniquely” part that makes me 🤔

Reminder that Kaepernick was forced from the NFL because he made a personal decision, based on his beliefs, to not stand for the anthem at the start of the game. This simple action, also an issue of free speech, sparked an entire national disruption. Why?
The central issue was always racism & police brutality. That was the issue before K being barred from playing was an issue. The controversy centered on K being outspoken on these topics & behaving like a defiant Negro when they told him to stop.

If you watch the new Tarantino, and there's any kind of audience, take note of how the audience reacts to the Bruce Lee impersonation. This is what systemic racism looks like. Not the performance which is perfect, the reaction which is hard-wired into members of this culture.
Take a second to audit what your first response is to seeing anyone on screen. How have you been conditioned to respond to... a black man, a black woman, a young Asian woman? an old Asian woman? We all mean well, right? Yet we are all loaded down w/this cultural weight of bias.
I mean... seriously. Do this. Young Asian man, what do you think? Romantic interest? or Long Duck Dong?

I was 16, when I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF.) I had no idea what was happening to me because at the time, it made no sense. However, I remember the pain of that period like noonday. I lived on dialysis until i was 22. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth

Hunter Gray, a Civil Rights leader in JXN, MS, in the early 1960s, died earlier this week. He is most famously known for taking part in the 1963 Woolworth sit-in in JXN, which yielded this iconic photo. Gray is sitting at the counter, on the left. #Mississippi #NonViolence
In 2015 Gray wrote an account of the day for the @guardian: "That’s me in the picture. . . . They cut my face with sharp brass knuckles; someone cut the back of my head with the jagged edge of a broken sugar container. There was a good deal of blood." theguardian.com/artanddesign/2…
The picture of course went instantly everywhere. “Friends across the country called to say they had seen it, and we got letters from people all over the world.”
