I just released a @Weather_Up_ update with some ASO experiments. 🎉 Apple seems to be punishing duplicate keywords in the app title (I duplicated “weather”, which used to boost that keyword). 🤦🏼‍♂️ They seem to be punishing hacks on update rather than going through live apps.
🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️ They still don’t seem to have addressed the exact name match hack. It’s an embarrassment that 50% of the top results for such a high traffic organic keyword are named things like “Weatherº”
And it’s similar (or worse) for lots of organic keywords. 🤦🏼‍♂️

1/ I have to disagree with @benthompson’s take in the @StratecheryMO email this morning on the App Store search brouhaha. Given how crude the search algorithm is, I don’t think @pschiller and @cue are lying about Apple’s apps making it to the top organically.
2/ Early on, App Store search was heavily weighted toward cumulative downloads, eventually they started shifting _some_ of that weight toward download momentum and even download rate for specific keywords. But that made it extremely difficult for new apps to ever get traction.
3/ I complained about this for years and Apple eventually added a ~7 day SEO boost for brand new apps to give them the opportunity to gain momentum in search. That combined with a boost from Apple’s other apps being so popular explains why new Apple apps shoot to #1 on day 1.

😔 Apple is still letting top grossing apps (@calm) get away with things that they’ve been rejecting other apps for. I (and lots of other developers I’ve talked to) was told that the price has to be on the button and in a font of similar size/weight as the other button text.
Now that they’ve fixed the Touch ID issues and improved the “buy sheet” () maybe the rules have been relaxed again. Has anyone else tried the big Continue button with the price hidden recently?
And of course Apalon is still doing it 🤦🏼‍♂️ ($156/yr for a weather app! And it’s obviously working or Apalon wouldn’t be doing it.)

People have said to out him. I get the sentiment, but for me, that's not what this is about. Public female figures face this garbage from entitled, unhinged strangers a lot. My wonderfully supportive male coworkers are routinely baffled by it, as it's almost never a 2-way street.
The best method, in my experience, is to drown out their antiquated, misogynistic poison with overwhelming support... which so many here have. Well done y'all, and keep it up for others.
