Yes. This was my grip with Namoi Klein. And I didn't especially like Franzen's list.

But I'm coming to the same place.

Should Canada punish Trudeau for his dalliance with the oil sands industry, because Canada is consequently dragging its feet on climate commitment?

I say no.
I say no because the Canadian Liberals are possibly the last bastion of pragmatism in the English speaking world. (And in large part because of francophone support, mind you!)
We will not survive the future with ideology alone. If we survive, it will require a more serious form of good intentions, one which is pragmatic, which balances all the multiple interests, which speaks seriously to the public.
The parties of the left are as happy with wedge issues as the parties of the right, and climate is being used as a wedge issue, in Canada as elsewhere.

This is disastrous, and any way of resisting it is to be admired and cherished.
Europe alone can't maintain civilization. A few outposts elsewhere are of enormous importance. There's no reason to expect a Canada slipping into divisive ideology will hold on to Alberta. At which point the whole improbable confederation crumbles.
We need an active, engaged, responsible Canada, and we need it more than a Canada which looks like it's headed for Paris compliance for a few years until it either whips back into excess or falls apart altogether.
No individual country can solve this problem. The best any country can do is set a good example. The most important thing to do is convince other countries to be serious.

Paris compliance for a few years which wrecks a country and ruins its compliance in the future is not good.
