TODAY: Excited to announce that we have pulled 30 major health systems together to take on maternal mortality & maternal health in the US— particularly in African American & underserved communities.

*We are calling on policymakers to pay for maternal care— not just for having a baby 2/
This is part of a larger initiative to bring better care and innovation to low income populations we announced last year.

We have begun work in mental health and moving care to the community. Thanks to these non profit systems & @HealthAVIA for leading.

I’m leaving DC after 2 days. Congress is back so the halls were 8 thick with lobbyists.

At one point, someone near me mistook me for a lobbyist.

I met with 2 Ds, 2Rs in House & Senate.

Some notes follow; follow if interested.
Big talk in health care: surprise medical bills, rx drug costs and what makes it in end of year package.

Some talk: ACA adds, prez politics.

No talk: repeal, what to do next 2/
There is a seriousness to addressing drug costs now.

Reason— Dems have traditionally been there. Now there’s a short window where Grassley is Chair of Senate Finance. If something is going to happen, everyone believes it will be with this Chair or wait until Ds are in control.3/

BREAKING: FDA announcing it will pull non-tobacco flavored e-cigarettes from the market.

I will tell you why I’m in favor of this. 1/
E-cigarettes can be a tool for someone who smokes cigarettes to use a less harmful product. However, data now shows that more people are moving from vaping to cigarettes than the other way around.

2/
More importantly 5 million kids are vaping. And a cartridge contains the nicotine of a full pack of cigarettes.

Smoking rates had been cut in half before these big companies started marketing e-cigarettes as cool. And making lots of money at it.

It’s a public health crisis. 3/

Here's what I think of as the dear #American journalists thread 2.0. It concerns Facebook and #lka, hate speech detection, and language complexities of the Global South, where @LIRNEasia (the think tank I work at) operates.
It seems a perfectly natural reaction, given the phenomenal amount of hate speech, to urge @facebook and @twitter to get their shit together and take it off the platform. Post March 2018, we - as in Sri Lankan civil society - tried.
In fact, one of the longest running arguments @sanjanah, @NalakaG and myself have had with the @facebook India team is that they consistently fail to live up to their own damn Community Standards, and only seem to pay attention as long as the @nytimes or @WIRED is slamming them.
