As the dust clears from the #SoleimaniAssassination a major takeaway relates to US perceptions of Iran's military capabilities: namely, that they are probably more impressive, and deadly, than were originally suspected.
Simulations have emphasized Iran's ability to use ballistic missiles to inflict heavy losses. After #Abqaiq and this attack, we have proof.

Iran clearly possesses the means to deliver precision strikes, with incredible accuracy. The ramifications could be significant.
My first reaction was that this was a calculated strike, meant as a provocative but ultimately restrained response to Soleimani. As we parse the data, it's also possible to see this as a demonstration

The last few days of #US military build up make a lot of sense now. The killing of #Iran Quds Force commander Suleimani cannot be overstated as an escalatory event, even if US will have intended it as ultimate show of force.
Suleimani was the most visible face of Iran’s fight against #IslamicState and US in the region. A huge loss of knowledge and expertise for IRGC and humiliating for #Khamenei after his tweet taunting #Trump. The question now must be what an Iranian response will be.
Iran can not afford not to respond to this level of attack, but does not necessarily have to respond immediately. They will understand how vulnerable Trump is going into the electoral period. US military and energy assets across #Iraq are at high risk of rocket and mortar attack.

by @MinsterTX

1️⃣ Questions like that seem to be fair but they’re not, this is a deliberate or non-deliberate failure of media outlets that express different ideologies rather than facts and technical outlook.

2️⃣ Such questions send a negative message without considering characteristics of various defensive weapons, and suggest a complete failure and absolute loss of control, as well as an absurd message that defense systems are useless.

Extremely accurate hits on those tanks. Very consistent.
The comment of “why didn’t the #US Patriot (PAC2/3) System stop the attack” has gone out the window with this one. The accuracy on this is incredible.

Thread on the impact of attacks on #Abqaiq #oil complex in the E. province in Saudi Arabia:
1- It is difficult at this stage to assess the impact of the attacks. While no details, we have to be mindful of the gagging orders & Saudi laws governing reporting, videos, and pictures.
2-Will the attacks lead to lower crude oil exports? We do not know at this stage. Will they lower production? We do not know either. What do we know? Majority of Saudi oil exports goes through Abqaiq facilities.
3-What do we know? Redundancy is common in Saudi oil facilities, especially #Abqaiq. While costly, redundancy helps in case of technical problems or attacks similar to what we have seen today. The existence of backup means the impact on production and exports is limited.

The #Abqaiq oil processing facility has been targeted multiple times in the past, from Al Qaida in 2006 to foiled plot in May 2019 and now with #drones. Strikes against oil infrastructure can have massive economic and #environmental consequences.

Image
