After the presidential election of 1964, Richard Nixon said the defeat of Barry Goldwater (whom he had supported) marked “a rejection of reaction, a rejection of racism, a rejection of extremism” and that it should serve as a wake up call for the GOP.

Trump is an extreme case but his administration is the culmination of a long-term evolution of a GOP that has gone from a suspicion of government to a rejection of the very act of governing itself.
This 2015 quotation from “Freedom Caucus” Rep. Raul Labrador, in which he adds air quotes to the word “governing,” suggests the degree to which disdain for governing had become central to the GOP’s message. /2

In my current research on backlashes, I am flagging comments like this, which attribute agency to the group targeted by backlashers. I think we need to do more to study the motives, actions, and perspectives of those who actually participate in backlashes. /1
Rather than assuming a reflexive response by backlash participants, who were supposedly “stimulated” to act (by the Civil Rights movement or, in this case, immigration), let’s grant them agency as we would activists in any other social movement./2
Such an approach, in which backlashes are “sparked” by campaigns for social justice or by immigration, are often inadvertently structured in such a way as to blame the victim. /3

#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

Movement intellectuals around the magazine National Review, who had gone a long way toward popularizing “conservatism” as a conscious and articulated political outlook, were never especially keen on Nixon.
William F. Buckley voted for Nixon in 1960. The magazine’s publisher, William Rusher, a key conservative activist, wrote in Barry Goldwater, the candidate he helped to draft for the 1964 presidential election.
