Had an interesting meeting today. A group of middle level businessmen, scammed by one of India’s top industrialists and a favourite of this regime, were lashing out at the media for not speaking up for them. Every media house they approached only sympathised with them. (1/n)
Until 8 months ago these people were great ‘nationalists’. Lashed out at those questioning the government on issues. I asked them what they wanted from me. “We only want you to speak for us. Koi aur karne ko tyaar nahin hai” They had collectively lost 700 crores (2/n)
I told them to download the Namo App and send their grievance to the PMO. They told me they had met 3 top ministers but even they couldn’t be of any help. They were desperate. Two of them claimed they were facing complete ruin as a result. (3/n)
I told them not to talk like the tukde-tukde gang. India was saying howdy now, Article 370 had been removed, Modiji was preparing to go to the moon, Imran Khan was being exposed daily and these people couldn’t sacrifice even 700 crores for the sake of the nation? (4/n)
I have little sympathy for well off people who think they are insulated from the subversion of every single institution. Or who think the subversion is ok as long as their interests are being served or when only certain groups of people are being ‘ put in their place’ (5/n)
When you join a mob to shut up voices that ask questions from governments don’t think it will affect only certain groups like Dalits or Muslims. Soon there will be no one left to ask questions on your behalf too. Remember, only democracy will rescue you. Not your beloved leaders.
