A few follow-ups on Johnson's "new offer" in response to queries. A) movement of people & CTA are seperate from movement of goods & SM/CU. CTA is bilateral arrangement between UK & IRL. Both have promised to keep it. Though future (right wing) UK regime could freely change that.
B) fact that UK inc NI would be seperate customs territory to EU inc IRL = tariffs apply in accordance with WTO = economic disaster for many NI & IRL businesses. Johnson betting on FTA with EU to minimise tariffs - but that's for future talks, might take years, might never happen
C) May's plans for future EU-UK relationship were already pretty distant - compared to current terms or to (say) EEA-type deal. Johnson's scheme looks significantly worse still. We're quite right to query his mandate for this, let alone be concerned about other damage & dangers
Corbyn thus quite right to say this Johnson plan is far worse than what May had negotiated. And I agree: any Labour MP thinking of supporting such a damaging & disruptive plan for NI/IRL, leading only to future uncertainty and blank cheque for hard right, should ponder own values
