Working late again thanks to two awful Trump #immigration policies: #PublicCharge rule (scheduled to kick in on Tues) & the end of #TPSElSalvador in Jan.

We'd already been trying to get as many #TPS holders to residency as possible, & this new deadline has us all scrambling.
#EastBoston, #Chelsea, & #Revere are home to one of the East Coast's largest Salvadoran populations. We know from our clients & weekly visits to the consulate that reality is starting to hit: Thousands of my neighbors will begin 2020 by losing the status they've held for 18+ yrs
We have been able to process many of them for advance parole, a special travel permit which will allow those with immediate relatives who are US citizens or relatives to re-enter lawfully and qualify for residency. It's getting to be too late for those who haven't.
Many #TPS holders have U.S.-born kids who are going on their 21 and could file for them. But if they haven't already secured a lawful entry, they likely won't be able to use this visa unless they leave the US for 10 yrs.

Breaking this news is one of the hardest things I do.
The #PublicCharge rule gave Trump admin an excuse to radically overhaul the entire process of applying for lawful permanent residency. The new round of forms released yesterday represent many hours of additional work, and many new reasons for a request for evidence or denial.
My Salvadoran clients are the hardest-working people I've ever met, but most are at poverty wages & barely making it in one of the country's priciest metro regions. This puts these families at serious risk of a #PublicCharge finding under the ridiculous new rule--so here we are.
While we're all hoping for one of the pending #PublicCharge suits to give us more time, I also know that every American immigration lawyer (including me) will be in the office a lot longer than we wanted to be tonight & through the holiday. We're all in this together, friends. 👊
this thread is remarkably short on jokes, so here's one from the "Affidavit of Self-Sufficiency" form which will now be required with all residency applications as of 10/15

#PublicCharge
