The winter of 1981-1982 was a fiercely prolific time in Prince's career. Working under the pseudonym Jamie Starr, Prince brought @TheMorrisDay into the studio in January 1982 to work on The Time's second album, What Time Is It?
On the album, the tracks would be credited to The Time's full live band, but the initial recordings were completed with just Morris Day on drums and Prince singing vocals and playing all the other instruments.
On January 14, 1982, in between recording The Time song "The Walk," Prince and Morris shifted to working on a new song, "International Lover." It's a song that would end up on Prince's own album, 1999.
With Prince on piano and Morris on drums, the first take of "International Lover" provides a fascinating glimpse of Prince's studio demeanor. He turns on a dime between soulful singing and playful banter, unable to contain his laughter about flying on "Morris International."
In his new memoir, On Time, Morris Day reflects on his memories of recording alone in the studio with Prince in this era. "Listening to it, it's hard to say where Prince stops and I begin," he writes.
