Thank you for this article about the important work of John Edmonstone, @EdinburghLive_: edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh… The photo, though, is of Jamaican National Hero Paul Bogle, leader of the Morant Bay Rebellion of 1865.
Perhaps the error came from this blog, which also uses Bogle's picture for Edmonstone and is top image search on google for me: biodiversity.utexas.edu/news/entry/joh…
Here's Bogle's image: jamaica-gleaner.com/article/lead-s… One of the most important figures in Jamaica's history.
It's also incorrect that the 1807 Slave Trade Act made 'the purchase or ownership of slaves illegal within the British Empire.' Slavery in the British Empire was not legally ended until 1834 (the act did not apply to India). This is a very common but significant mistake.
The 1807 Act only affected the Atlantic slave 'trade'. The legislation abolishing slavery was the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Will4/3-…
That's 27 more years of slavery (31 if you count the apprenticeship period from 1834-38, during which formerly enslaved people still had to do forced labour). Many thousands more people who were born and grew up enslaved, across the Caribbean, South Africa and Mauritius.
Still glad to see the article--Edmonstone's story is an important one that more people should know about. It would be good if those errors could be corrected though, @Hilary_W.
@Hilary_W It would also be great if you could remove the photo of Bogle from your blog about Edmonstone, UT Austin Biodiversity Centre @texas_IB biodiversity.utexas.edu/news/entry/joh…
