[Thread] 1/ This one's for @GretaThunberg . I was interested in the overlap of pro-Trump and right-wing accounts with climate denial #climatechange denial. Given Trump's obvious steer & tweet against Greta, I was curious to see how ppl spoke her on Twitter #climatestrike
2/ Disclaimer: Greta has 2.8 million followers, and will be inundated with tweets. Indeed the number of people mentioning her on Twitter is huge. In a 12 hour period yesterday there were around 51,000 people interacting with her. See below > 
3/ This was from around 16,000 unique accounts. Given that climate denial should be a fringe belief, it makes sense that Trump's hue and cry to attack Greta awoke the MAGA trolls. In this sample of 16,000 accounts, there are a few points worth highlighting...
4/ Firstly, in terms of any indication of political orientation in the bios, the most common word is 'climate'. When you look into this, it's mostly accounts that support action against climate change. In theory that's reassuring, assuming they are real. What's bizarre again
5/ though is that the second most common indicator of political allegiance in those accounts interacting with @GretaThunberg is the pro-Trump element. The ninth most common word is Trump, and the 13th most common word MAGA. Apart from climate the other top words are more
6/ general nouns or verbs. Of course we see the familiar offenders, 'love' and 'fan'. Of all the interactions with Greta, the most retweeted was a pro-#climatestrike tweet, which again makes sense given her position. The second most popular tweet (highlighted below) was one
7/ criticising climate change activists as 'loons' - also Jane Fonda. Below is a link to the tweet. No prizes for guessing, it was a tweet from a MAGA account >
8/ So in short Greta gets a lot of abuse by pro-Trump accounts, more than one would expect given that climate change denial is a minority view in the scientific community. It's amazing how what Trump says on Twitter these accounts follow... #ClimateChange
9/ A quick topic analysis of the bios interacting with @GretaThunberg also show that Trump features quite prominently. Ignore the first two lines and look at three. So many pro-Trump accounts interact with Greta that he is considered a prominent topic by a computer...
