My computer’s crashed so I can’t update the tables on the #HK protests, but I’ve done the calculations. As of 10/21, 10,763,466 protesters have participated in 591 protests over 138 days.
I’ve seen some news media refer to dwindling protest numbers, but actually there’ve already been more #HK protesters in October (1,509,480) than in September (1,433,125)-a slight increase. These numbers don’t include the many protests with no precise crowd counts/estimates.
The biggest October protests:
10/20 350,000
10/14 130,000 (Pass US HRD Act)
10/6 800,000 (anti-mask ban)
10/1 200,000 (PRC day)
These numbers are even more extraordinary considering marches have been banned & police violence & arrests have increased.
And as I emphasise over & over, the vast majority of #HK protesters remain nonviolent. That doesn’t mean there’s no aggressive actions but that the media narrative of ‘escalating violence’ only tells part of the story & misses much else.
Maybe the media think nonviolent protest doesn’t matter but actually it’s these large numbers coupled w more aggressive protest actions that give govt pause for thought- it’s still a mass movement with overwhelming popular support (a perception substantiated by polls).
