Danielle Smith tried this in 2012 and it was a major factor in the election of Alison Redford and the ultimate demise of the Wild Rose Party. Clearly, the majority of Albertans opposed it then, just as they do now.
Courts have ruled that medical professionals and marriage commissioners do not have the "freedom of religion" to deny public service to women, minorities, or LGBTQ2 people (or anyone). This is a violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
If Bill 207 passes into law, health professionals will be able to deny M.A.I.D., refuse abortion services or referrals, deny birth control, and promote abstinence only.
Conscience rights are nothing more than a code word for legalized discrimination and will take Alberta back to the 1950s. What's next? Denial of housing, employment, and service based on race? gender? sexual orientation?
This is incredibly dangerous legislation that is akin to the Southern United States, not Canada. Will there be separate water fountains in schools? Refusal to teach evolution? Climate change?
Under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, no "freedom" is absolute. Freedom of religion cannot be used to discriminate against others; especially in public service. Jason Kenney wants to change that.
