Wang “William” Liqiang is trying to obtain political asylum in Australia and claims that he was a spy for #China / The Communist Party.

He also claims to have a trove of inside intelligence on China's political subversion ops against #HongKong, Taiwan, and Australia. 👀
He also identified Chinese senior military intel officers in Hong Kong and brought all his info to Australia's ASIO - the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.
I guess time will tell if he's telling the truth, but he's trying to get asylum and it seems that he reported himself to Australia's government. Or, at least, I haven't read anything YET that says he was caught spying & is now trying to get asylum.
Of course China is smearing him and claims he is an unemployed fugitive.

CCP police said he was found guilty of auto import fraud in 2016 & was given a suspended sentence, and he forged his passport.

Now, I don't have any way of knowing who is telling the truth. China certainly does smear other defectors and makes others disappear (like the former Interpol President). They also absolutely DO send in spies & conduct influence ops all over place.
So, what made this guy suddenly decide to turn himself in to Australia?

Was he just getting too nervous?
Did his conscience take over and he felt he should do the right thing?
Is he STILL working for the CCP & trying to pull one over on Australia?
Or...could he have been a double agent?

Also, it seems odd to me that China would just suspend his prison sentence for fraud. Is that something that sounds typical of the CCP?
China claims he defrauded a business partner out of 4.6 million yuan ($653K), which is quite a lot of money over there.

The $ amounts in these cases were higher, but China has given people the death penalty for financial fraud:
