American deterrence was never restored after Iran occupied the US embassy in Tehran in 1979, holding 52 hostages for more than a year.

We know deterrence was never restored because Iran was willing to try the same trick again in Baghdad this week.
Soleimani was the architect of a blood-soaked Iranian empire extending to the Mediterranean.

In killing him Trump reestablishes the deterrent threat protecting US embassies that was lost in 1979.

This is a message directed not just to Iran, but at China and Russia too.
You can be darned sure no in the world thinks seizing an American embassy is a genius tactical move right now. Not in Iran—and not anywhere else.
Of course Iran will look for ways of hitting back. They may succeed too.

But keep your eye on the ball: A free nation has to be able to deter attacks by its enemies.

What Trump did today was to rectify a weakness in the US deterrent posture that has dragged on for 40 years.
This means that the US has retaliated not only for the attack on America’s Baghdad embassy in 2019, but also for the horrific attack on America’s Tehran embassy in 1979.

This was the right thing to do. Americans should feel proud that their government wasn’t afraid to do it.
And they should be proud of this just response even if a price will have to be paid for it.

You can’t maintain the existence of a free nation for free.
