I used the Twitter Standard API to collect the Tweets. The full query was: “OmaUmweltsau OR umweltsau OR nazisau OR wdr OR wdr2 OR UmweltsauOma OR UmweltsauGate OR k2912 OR TomBuhrow OR Buhrow”.

Including "wdr" and "wdr2" increased the number of false positives. After looking at Tweets that wouldn't be in the dataset, I came to the conclusion that including them creates a more complete picture.

This decision led to the mention of two accounts as examples. But those accounts weren't active themselves in the beginning. Tweets by them against the WDR were retweeted in the time frame I looked at. When I recalculated influence (retweeting accounts) for the first hours /3
I noticed the mistake. Once the article got published and I saw that they were still named, I notified Spiegel about it. But it took some time until it got fixed, because they wanted to fully understand how it happened. /4
In the Retweet network accounts that tweeted or were retweeted got added as a node and Retweets as an edge. All nodes have timestamps and they appear when the tweet as well when they get retweeted. The visualization in the article shows the network over the whole time frame. /5
Size of nodes represents by how many accounts they were retweeted (out-degree).
Positions were calculated with ForceAtlas2 (journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…) with "Strong Gravity" and Gravity set to 0.05.
