What I wanted to say imply “After substantial research on X, I do not understand it perfectly, but [approaching probably 98% here].”
What I said: 完全に分からない。
What I probably should have said: 完全には分からない。

What I probably should have said: 完全には分からない。
What my counterparty heard: “After substantial research on X, I perfectly fail to understand it, so [you should treat me like I understand 0% here].”
Grumble grumble languages grumble grumble.
Grumble grumble languages grumble grumble.
For additional joy my counterparty modeled me as lying to be polite so they actually estimated me at 20%.
