THREAD: Remember when England's beaches were littered with human shit from the sewage being poured into the sea just off shore, and how the UK councils actually tried to fight the EU in court to keep it that way?
The EU legislation resulted in 95% of British beaches being safe to swim in. Nearly a year ago, in anticipation of Brexit, the UK once again began pumping raw sewage just off shore.

And by September last year, more of England's councils joined in, once more celebrating Brexit by pouring raw sewage onto our beaches where children and families play.

The EU’s 1976 Bathing Water Directive – and successful legal action by the European Commission – made our beaches clean, clear and swimmable. But it wasn’t easy; the UK fought hard to maintain the right to continue pouring sewage into the sea just off beaches.
Successive UK governments exploited whatever loophole they could find, pumping untreated sewage into our seas until 1998 – longer than any other European country.
