UK farming standards are not only high but many of the EU agri standards are based on UK input, UK farmers want to keep them high for both moral & trade cynical reasons so do UK consumers..
So why the problem?
It’s a paradox:
If UK keeps UK agri standards to EU level - which everyone wants - people will say:
“what’s the point of Brexit?”
But if it doesn’t it loses huge EU export market for the right to change standards it doesn’t want or need to change.
There’s only one way out.
The UK govts only chance now is to find a way to disguise following EU agri/food standards - which it itself helped set - in such a way as to:
1. Convince people it has sovereignty
2. Convince EU it won’t use that sovereignty
It’s pointless.
It’s insane.
It’s Brexit.
