Current status: trying out an MRE in case the #COVID19 outbreak brings the end times
I think I got authentic U.S. military versions, complete with the proper notices.
Q: Why is there French on U.S. military MREs?
A: Because the only two official languages of NATO are French and English. To be a NATO employee, you have to be fluent in one and have a working knowledge of the other.
You can’t see it in the pic but there’s steam coming out cooking my sausage patty. It’s got a mild chemical odor.
The reaction is:
Mg + 2H₂O → Mg(OH)₂ + H₂ + heat
Apparently, this produces enough hydrogen to be a safety hazard in enclosed places like planes, which is why the outside of the box says don't do it on planes.
The history of canning is, well, MREs. Napolean started it so to keep his troops supplied with food, and the British perfected it for their army/navy.

The sausage patty wasn't bad, through frankly I was more interested in the chemical reaction than eating the patty. Maybe next time I'll try a faster chemical reaction, like Fe₂O₃ + 2 Al
MREs are weird, in that it's something perfectly normally that a million people have experience with -- yet something completely foreign to the rest of the population who weren't in the military.
