Turkey continues to implement “temporary protection” for Syrians in our country. None of our Syrian brothers & sisters has been asked to leave. If they choose to stay, they can. If they choose to leave, they can.
We have modified our policy and we will not stop refugees from leaving Turkey. Given our limited resources & personnel, we are focusing on planning for contingencies in case of further inflows from Syria instead of preventing refugees who intend to migrate to Europe.
Some of these refugees decided to leave following this change of policy. The number of those who left Turkey for Europe in the past several days is 80,888. This number may increase in the following days.
Turkey can no longer accept additional refugees from the Idlib region in Syria but we are preparing for any irregular migration flows. Europe and others must take robust action to address this monumental challenge. We can’t be expected to do this on our own.
Turkey hosts 3.7 million Syrian refugees who escaped war, destruction, chaos. We are proud to have spent our precious national resources to help our brothers and sisters thanks to the generosity of Turkish people. The international community left us alone in facing this challenge
Starting with the EU, many of our allies are not sharing this burden by honoring their political and humanitarian responsibilities. We are not getting any substantial support in our efforts to prevent further humanitarian suffering in Idlib and elsewhere in Syria.
The deconfliction zone in Idlib aimed to prevent atrocities & massacres against 4 million civilians in this area. Our goal has been to prevent ethnic cleansing and war crimes by the Assad regime as well as displacement and more refugees. We have been left alone in this struggle!
We have said it, time and again, that we can no longer accommodate renewed refugee inflows if there is no serious burden sharing. We have called on the US & EU to create a safe zone, which we are doing on our own now. The lack of support by our allies has been disheartening!
As our calls have been largely ignored, promises unkept, and our forces targeted on the ground, we have no more patience for empty rhetoric and lack of tangible support. We can no longer accept the attitude that millions of IDPs and refugees are somehow our problem only!
Humanitarian suffering & unprecedented displacement & migration challenge in Syria is not only our problem but that of the region, Europe and the entire world. We are open to serious and robust cooperation & we will do our part but others must do their part!
We view outside criticism of our refugee policy with a sense of incredulity! Those who fight over what to do with a few thousand refugees dare criticize a country with 3.7 million refugees for saying “enough is enough.” The rampant hypocrisy is disingenuous and shameful!
