Some thoughts about communication and misinformation and #COVID19. 1. Mistrust of the federal government and other national culture-shaping institutions has devolved the locus of authority to states and localities. Look at how many subscribers your local health dept now has.
2. The major media needs a counter-disinformation strategy and pronto. This includes everything from backend editorial and headline choices to amplification effect training to reminders to audiences not to Tweet or share everything that scares them.
3. I do not see the point in @CNN deciding to “call” #COVID2019 a pandemic before health officials do. It seems simultaneously true that the reality is grim AND media-nourished panic responses can make it worse. Why brand this? Why call attention to the branding?
4. Local officials should think about framing mitigation efforts using a visual story that everyone can get behind. “flattening the curve” seems as good as any. Everyone can do their part to flatten the curve. This will help people understand why their personal efforts matter.
From sources and other reporting, foreign state actors are amplifying misinformation into disinformation inside the United States. Will @US_CYBERCOM name and shame? Seems like a prudent policy now.
6. The media would be wise to examine how (the few remaining) local sources of journalism cover outbreaks and new cases. It may help add humility and caution to coverage.
7. Levity works. I don’t mind (non-racist) #COVID19 humor and memes. In fact, I think they are an essential part of integrating the reality of this disease into our lives. Humor helps reduce panic.
Anyone else have any observations or thoughts about communication, misinformation and #coronavirus? Reply away.
The advice to all of us about mitigation (wash hands, etc) are simple, clear and seemingly effective. We should repeat and amplify them ad nausem. Like: tomorrow: Wash, Vote, Wash again. Online: think before you share. Check before you share. Verify before you share. Etc.
