I believe countries like UK and US are opting to reduce the amount of time their citizenry deals with this crisis by allowing mass infection.
If you look at the infection rates and the flatten the curve graphs, Allowing mass infection does allow societies to move through the pandemic quicker. But at great loss of human life, unnecessarily.
