Rare glimpse in a ICU treating coronavirus
In severe cases lungs are destroyed
A lot of staff/equipment needed
Patient age ranks from 30 to 77
They don’t all have pre-existing conditions
Imo seems hard to know why the severe cases are severe/who’s at risk

The thing is our healthcare system is struggling already and we cannot know for sure who’s at risk to end up in ICU -not just the old&sick

People not supposed to be vulnerable need to protect themselves as well. 30 years old. 40 years old. With no pre-existing conditions. For the others- but also for themselves.

Seriously I’d be interested to hear what @neil_ferguson has to say about delays and the NHS ability to cope.
(I would be really relieved to be proved wrong about this 👇I personally don’t see why infection rate would slow down by itself? But surely please I’m wrong this curve will autoflatten right?)

Also I don’t get these assumptions
How is 1 out of 4 hospitalised in ICU (20% of total cases in hospital / 5% cases in ICU for an average 20 days) translates as “only” 531k deaths? When almost 2m ppl would need ICU?

Analysis of #Covid19 patients in the Jiangsu Province, on the central-east coast of China. This is just a good insight into the #coronavirus patient experience from a clinical point of view.

Study was carried out by 16 institutions across the region.
Sample: 60 severely ill Covid-19 patients between January 23 and February 24

One of the main symptoms for severeness was high respiratory rate of more than 30 breaths per minute.

Early intervention included resting support, antiviral therapy, early oxygen therapy.
The 60 patients accounted for less than 10% of 631 cases across 12 hospitals in the region.

The youngest patient was 26 and the oldest was 97. The median age of 57, and 35 of the 60 were male.

The most common symptoms were fever (80%) and dry cough (51.7%)

The current case fatality rate (CFR) for #coronavirus is 6%. For every 100 closed cases of coronavirus, six people have died globally.

That makes it 60x deadlier than the flu, which kills 0.1% of those diagnosed.

The coronavirus is extremely contagious. Some estimates for R0 range up to 8 or even 9. That’s 6x the contagiousness of the flu.

Multiply 60x the mortality times 5-6x the contagiousness and you get that coronavirus can kill more than 300x what the flu does every year.
