The whole story really highlights the problem with the unholy alliance between business owners, supply side economics (that aren’t worker friendly) and the @GOP. In a public health crisis, the CEO mentality still attempts to maintain profits while skimping on worker well-being.
IOW, the CEO mentality is very much aligned with Trump’s inclination to minimize the threat of Coronavirus/COVID19, not just b/c many of them voted for this disaster and still support it, but b/c acknowledging the scope of the problem then working to fix it requires less profit.
They don’t want things to shut down for safety and containment of the virus, they want to keep plugging along like there’s nothing to 👀 here. They don’t wanna pay workers for sitting at home in CDC-induced quarantine if they aren’t able to maintain pre-COVID productivity levels.
Some businesses may slightly loosen their CEO/GOP mentality around working virtually or brief extensions of approved leave, but overall the fact remains that our social safety net isn’t strong enough to mitigate the callousness and greed of the 1%. Hence the #FamiliesFirstBill.💅🏾
This situation is unique b/c the virus won’t spare people who think it’s a hoax, it’ll trickle up to the top no matter how hard Trump, Fox “news” and the GOP lie and deny it. This is the Congressional Ds’ opportunity to preview and pass worker/family/America-friendly policy.
Historically we know the 1% makes bad/inhumane choices largely for the sake of profit and political power, but the trickle up effect of #COVID19 is looming b/c Trump’s propagandized regular Joe Six Packs into believing they don’t need to worry or take any safety precautions. 😷
This is exacerbated by the fact that for 2 months crooked the right wing echo chamber on TV/AM radio has parroted every single last one of Trump’s lethal lies about Coronavirus. They used bigotry and xenophobia re: China/SK to assure themselves it couldn’t happen to White people.
Trump/GOP voters have made (will continue to) make terrible decisions b/c their personal/political ideology lacks sufficient empathy to support a robust safety net, neither during or after a crisis. COVID19 will make many of them need it (reluctantly) the same way Trump now does.
Ultimately all of the above is why those of us who’ve always supported paid sick/family leave, universal healthcare, common sense public health policy, emergency wage loss compensation and social security would be wise to get behind Democratic efforts to mitigate the crisis now.
Of course it’s annoying as hell that Trump voters willfully voted for #InstabilityInChief thereby guaranteeing perpetual crisis and panic, but we should seize this moment to not only protect/heal the community from a virus but also to vote the GOP vectors of austerity out too.
People always ask why millions aren’t in America’s streets protesting, boycotting or general striking, and invariably the answer ends up being somewhere between “can’t take off of work”, “living check2check” no child/senior care”. These reasons have now become the actual crisis.
The very conditions that prevent so many Americans from being civically engaged are fueling the entrenched austerity that comes from the combo of GOP/CEO mentality and MAGA masochism in our government. #COVID2019 spotlights the rock and hard place between the 99% and 1%.
What this means is Trump/the GOP have, depending on how you see it, (either inadvertently or purposely with malicious intent, or both) created the level of public chaos and panic that threaten to induce an involuntary “general strike” that drains the 1% of profit/productivity.
It’s like neglecting to repair a household appliance at a lower cost for years and just sending it thoughts and prayers for an unlikely recovery, then frantically scrambling to gather enough money for a whole new appliance when the one you neglected completely breaks down on you.
Honestly we don’t yet know your relative risk or the incidence/prevalence rate of #COVID19 in your community (or the rest of America) b/c we haven’t been testing or surveilling it appropriately for ~2 months or the last 2 yrs. Distancing/sterile practices can lower risk though.
Me too, he desperately wants/needs narcissistic supply from feigned altruism b/c everybody already knows he’s a sociopath with a huge body count. Vetoing a comprehensive #COVID19 bill (*if Grim Reaper Mitch even lets it get passed in the Senate) would only enrage America further.
Plus there’s this. A narcissist/sociopath doesn’t mind how crass this sounds, and Trump knows full well that his most fervent supporters STILL don’t blame him for his incompetence or malfeasance. In Fox/MAGAt world the crisis didn’t actually start until DT “took charge” on 3/13.
The worst thing Trump/the @GOP have going for their “none of the shitty pandemic response is Trump’s fault and he, alone, can still fix it” narrative™️ is the public will now have plenty of free time in quarantine to watch them keep creating more disasters that fail humanity.
