People w underlying illness are high risk but do you realize how many of those are preventable? When I was researching my upcoming book, MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN, I was shocked at how good we are at solving #health problems w research & how bad we are when its up to us. (3/4)

I see a lot of ongoing debate, and some snark, about people pivoting into #COVIDー19 related research, particularly in #psychology. As the PI of a lab working on one of these projects, here is a thread on my thoughts:
First off, I totally get the snark. Academics are like baby ducklings. Someone gets a Nobel Prize or a Nature paper on something, a year later there are 300 new projects on that topic. VSS last year was Deep Learn All the Things. No doubt that we love a good bandwagon.
When I first started seeing psychology papers rolling out, my first reaction was a) mild jealousy at being so incredibly productive at a time when my brain was in complete failure mode and b) mild ire at what seemed, at first, a bit opportunistic.

Do everyone a HUGE favor - stop spreading misinformation & disinformation!

Lt. Mills has studied social media & disinformation for several years & has some advice on keeping bad information from "going viral"
#misinformation comes from people who mean well but share things that are untrue.

#disinformation is false information coming from people with bad intentions. Some of these people are systematically targeting Americans from overseas.
Think about the term, "Going Viral" - this is often attributed to harmless and even positive things like cute puppy videos. That video or story spreads from one person to the next just as a virus is transmitted.

Sadly, bad information can be spread exactly like a virus as well.

Comparisons to other diseases:

Compared to SARS, MERS, coronavirus is "more transmissible... really unforgiving".

Compared to the flu - "I hear a lot of this, 'it's just like the flu' - it's 20x more deadly, from what we know right now"
The flu is, comparatively, "not that transmissible"... "for the flu you need close contact", which is defined as being within 6 feet for 10-15 mins.

I don’t have medical facts, but it points up the confusion many people (even in healthcare) have about different kinds of CNS infections.

So, a brief #tweetorial on meningitis and the like. /1
There are two main types of nervous system infections: meningitis and encephalitis.

ENCEPHALITIS is infection of the brain substance. It presents with marked alteration of mental status, along with fever & elevated white blood cell count. Other symptoms are variable. /2
MENINGITIS is infection of the lining around the brain (& spinal cord). Cardinal symptoms are severe headache, nausea/vomitting, light sensitivity, and, above all neck stiffness.

It looks different than encephalitis. Alteration of mental state may or may not be present. /3
