@IDDRI_ThinkTank’s ‘Between a rock and a hard place: Economic, social and environmental impact of #Covid19 on #India’ is live now on YouTube:
Tune in! Image
.@jaffrelotc: "The present #crisis is making visible the impact of decades of growth without #development based on growing #inequality" @CERI_SciencesPo
"Loans are central to the second #stimulus package but banks don’t lend to #MSMEs due to NPAs. This also explains the decline in #investment in #India" - @jaffrelotc (@CERI_SciencesPo)
.@jaffrelotc - "The government of India and some state governments are fighting the #COVID19 crisis by making structural #reforms - self-sufficiency via #MakeInIndia and disinvestment."
@CERI_SciencesPo @IDDRI_ThinkTank
"The deepening of the #fiscal deficit has accelerated #privatization plans" - @jaffrelotc from @CERI_SciencesPo at @IDDRI_ThinkTank webinar.
"Over the years #green projects have had a much lower rate of NPAs compared to non-green portfolios. Longer term #sustainability is better with green projects" - Dr Ajay Mathur (@teriin) at @IDDRI_ThinkTank webinar.
Dr Ajay Mathur (@teriin) discusses how green #affordablehousing and sustainable #Transportation are important opportunities going forward, at @IDDRI_ThinkTank's webinar
"There are opportunities for multilateral funding from international agencies and pension funds for green #Technologies" - Dr Ajay Mathur (@teriin) at @IDDRI_ThinkTank webinar. Watch here: bit.ly/2Yueuxz
.@VaidehiTandel from @IDFCinstitute discusses the fragility #COVID19 has created in India from an #urban perspective. @IDDRI_ThinkTank Image
On the #vulnerability of #slums: "57% of containment zone epicenters in #Mumbai are within slums and slums constitute 42% of total households in Mumbai" - @VaidehiTandel at @IDDRI_ThinkTank's webinar
"#migrants who were daily wage workers have found themselves without a #safety net due to the lockdown and stoppage of economic activity" @VaidehiTandel at @IDDRI_ThinkTank webinar
"The other fragility of #pandemic is that it has highlighted failures. First, #urban areas don’t have the necessary social safety nets" - @VaidehiTandel at @IDDRI_ThinkTank webinar
On failures of #urban planning: "The response of planners to the issues high #density in urban areas has been to add #regulations which increases the cost of building" - @VaidehiTandel
The third failure is that of #publichealth. The health system is much better in cities compared to rural areas. Also, Indian citizens do not have enough per capita public open space and #AirQuality is extremely poor. - @VaidehiTandel at @IDDRI_ThinkTank's webinar
On reform solutions: "Policymakers may try to resettle slum residents to sub-urban affordable housing, away from the crowded city centers, but this has historically not worked" - @VaidehiTandel from @IDFCinstitute at @IDDRI_ThinkTank's webinar
On #decentralization: "We will need policies that strengthen smaller urban #local bodies, so they are able to provide the services, have the revenues, and can plan for their growth"
-@VaidehiTandel at @IDDRI_ThinkTank's #COVID webinar

Last week, IDFC Institute collaborated with Madhya Pradesh Police (MPP) in the launch of PARIMAL (Pracademic Action Research Initiative with Multidisciplinary Approach Lab) within @MPPA_bhopal. We congratulate MPP on their commitment towards evidence based policing (1/n).
PARIMAL is an initiative under the DG Research & Policy Cell. Our Assistant Director & Junior Fellow, @AvantiDurani explained how the lab will follow a three-pronged approach of training, research and collaborations to amplify incremental efforts towards police reform. (2/n)
As part of the week-long launch, MPP organised roundtable discussions on the theme of Justice Inclusion and Victims’ Access (JIVA) to address vulnerabilities and exclusion in the system. The discussions can be accessed here: youtube.com/playlist?list=… (3/n)

1/10 || What can policymakers do to improve Indian #cities post the #pandemic ?

With @wef, we interviewed experts to talk about 7 important aspects. Find quick insights from their recommendations in this thread >>>

- Read our blog for more context:
idfcinstitute.org/blog/2021/indi…
2/10 || Planning: Bimal Patel & Shlomo Angel

- Manage the spatial growth of cities and allow them to build more,
- Plan road networks for future horizontal expansion,
- Revoke faulty policies that constraint the use of floor space to build vertically.
3/10 || Housing: Richard Green & Sahil Gandhi

- Provide public housing for the poor; India can learn from successful models in Singapore or Hong Kong,
- Enable efficient rental markets,
- Manage density better to prevent overcrowded and unsafe housing.

A proposed change in WhatsApp’s #privacy policy has dominated headlines and prompted users worldwide to rethink their choice of messaging apps. Since then, WhatsApp has undertaken multiple efforts to clarify how the change affects users. #thread
(1/n)
WhatsApp has over 400 million monthly active users in India (one-fifth of their global user base) and handles over 1 billion messages a day globally tcrn.ch/2XKWiib
WhatsApp Business claims to have 50 million users globally bit.ly/35NIeIY

#WhatsApp also decided to push the change to May instead of February, to assuage user privacy concerns and stem the flight of users to competing apps like #Signal and #Telegram that saw millions of signups last week. cnn.it/3srOHTP

#YearinReview Here is our list of 5 of the most interesting papers on state capacity this year!
Devesh Kapur's 'Why Does the Indian State Both Fail and
Succeed?' seeks to explain why India tends to have a better record on specific tasks like eradicating polio—where delivery is episodic with inbuilt exit—than on things like improving public health outcomes more generally.
Kapur proposes some explanations: understaffing of local governments, ramifications of India adopting democracy at a 'precocious' stage relative to its economic development, and the persistence of social cleavages in India by caste, gender, and religion.

#YearInReview Here is a snapshot of our interesting work on #policing this year!
The #COVID19 lockdown posed a unique law and order challenge, and the police were at the forefront. @_NehaSinha, @AvantiDurani, @priveda22 & @TveshaSippy curated a list of measures for #police and the prison administration during and post lockdown bit.ly/2X1vERk
Being at the forefront also posed operational and business continuity risks for the police. @_NehaSinha & @TveshaSippy addressed this risk in this blog post published by @IPF
