Over the years I have tweeted about various aspects about how we travel and its affect on the #environment and the world around us. Through those years I've become more conscious of the travel decisions I make and it hasn't...
...always been easy. In my small way I'd travel for business by train rather than car, using rail to travel to #Brussels#Paris, offsetting my #CarbonFootprint when travelling by air. Now I'm looking to #EV, 2replace my car...
A couple of years ago whilst I was in #London, I decided to visit the #ExtinctionRebellion protest in #Whitehall where I managed to speak with one of its members, talking about the #Climate and Travel:
I suspect the #COVID19 crisis has caused many not just to rethink their lives but of the world around them. I don't think its sufficient to simply provide occasional tweets on this subject, so am now producing a rolling thread
Going forward, I think it's important for #Consumers to think abt choices they make, perhaps even resisting 'pester' power of corporations? I certainly think as a #Consumer, we no longer have the luxury of not doing so....
Starting with #Aviation an earlier 1999 report sets out the issues relating to #flight - PX levels to increase by 5%pa to 2015; fuel increase by 3% due to #aircraft efficiencies, +more....ipcc.ch/site/assets/up…
2012(?) rpt highlighted knowledge gaps, remarkably stating: "A better knowledge of consumer travel behaviour is needed, particularly for aviation"! Hmm, so much data is available, so many cheap fares! ipcc.ch/site/assets/up…
To understand the nature of emissions, the 2021 report summarised the nature of transport emissions, emissions that create reactions and change in our atmospheric environment...
And note also the commentary that there is a need to reduce travel through management of the 'offer' as part of the overall solution - in other words, we have to change from 'I must have' to 'Do I need to do this'!
But note the #AviationEnvironmentFederation's comments about the @GOVUK announcement in July 2021 - from their comments, I would say 'aspiration' and 'light-touch' regulation follows Govt thinking!
I have also been thinking about #cruises - this 2019 article sets out in glorious technicolour the issues at stake and this should perhaps be the starting point for all #Cruise holidaymakers: forbes.com/sites/jamesell…
* #Aviation direct EU emissions 2017 = 3.8%
* Aviation sector (indirect) EU emissions 2017 = 13.9%
* 1 PX emissions - flies Lisbon/New York = av EU person heating home for 1 year
Plenty of #Carbon off-setting schemes out there, but mostly for #Aviation. Travelling by #Ferry or on a #Cruise, use this quick calculator to u/stand the emissions for your mode of travel...
Interesting article, partic on #BenidormEffect; our footprint has much wider implications; wouldn't development of super-hubs simply grow the problem, particularly if it was a commercial opportunity? majorcadailybulletin.com/news/comment/2…
If you want to u/stand the current status & future of flight then watch the #airbussummit from one of the worlds major aircraft manufacturers: @Airbus - currently discussing the future of emissions...
Here is the @Airbus#AirbusSummit for today and tomorrow - very interesting - a good source to understand the steps that are being currently taken...ties in with the broader discussion...
I've been privileged to see #Elephants in the wild in #SouthAfrica - the article reminds me of the practice in the #Canaries a few years ago of being photographed with a 'baby' lion/monkey etc...
As #Consumers become more concerned about the Climate and their role in its change, here's a warning that @CMAgovUK will apparently be watching the claims that Travel Companies make: ttgmedia.com/news/travel-fi…
The statement 2B launched at #COP26Glasgow on #Tourism. #Consumers will be able to ask their Travel Providers if they are signatories to this and request how they are complying with its objectives:
Interesting article & from speaking with holidaymakers & others, I do detect a shift in thinking. As much as I'd like to jet off, I need to rethink; we will all have to do our bit; moderating desires?
So the recent #APD cut for domestic #Flights made real sense ahead of #COP26, but, as this article highlights, why isn't the money gained by #HMTreasury, used for #Environmental research/action?
Another interesting study/finding reveals that altering flight paths could reduce harmful CO2 & Non-CO2 emissions by up to 10%; worth considering? Worth acting on?
Is it time to dis-incentivise any Industry that uses #CarbonOffsets as part of their plan to demonstrate that they have reduced emissions? A need for real action?
Prediction: As #COP26 fades from the memory, & #COVID19 changes from #Pandemic to #Endemic spread, just watch an Industry run for the hills for that € or £, with most #Consumers not giving it a second thought, or am I wrong?
A must watch film; an overview of what a 3-degree world will look like and how the affects are already being felt. As #holidaymakers, we simply cannot escape our responsibilities & decisions
The following link to a thread is important. If you believe in Travel and the enrichment of Travel and other cultures, then read and watch the films in this thread:
