If it really is the case that doctors and researchers are afraid of appearing to be anti-protest, and that is why so much of Twitter has gone silent on #COVID19, I gotta say, I am a little disappointed.
Y’all spent so much time building up credibility in a moment when so many wanted to deny the pandemic was even happening. Why fight so hard for that voice and then stop using it?
I also find some of the “racism is a public health issue, too” arguments a little tortuous. Racism absolutely has wide-ranging effects on every possible health outcome, including #COVID19, but we are not going to end racism in the next few months or even years.

This afternoon the inevitable happened. I had an accident in my wheelchair, whilst walking my dog, because a walker didn’t keep a safe distance. Lots of people offered to help - which I had to refuse - because social distancing. I haven’t felt so vulnerable for a long time. 1/8
We are both ok and not hurt, but we were in an unsafe position for 10 minutes or so whilst we waited for my husband to come and help. All because someone didn’t simply step out of the way. I tried to put as much distance between us as possible 2/8
And by doing so I misjudged the kerb (the joy of #CerebralPalsy and spatial awareness). I ended up with the front half of my wheelchair in the road, my dog in the road, and the back half of my wheelchair stuck on the kerb thanks to my anti-tip wheels 3/8

** Thread for those trying to access priority food delivery slots: **

Ok, so it's taken over 3 weeks, but AT LAST, I have a @sainsburys delivery slot for next Friday. Sod's law, just like a bus, @asda came along at the same time, offering one too! Here's how I managed it: 1/
1st - as someone in the #HighRiskCovid19 #shielding group I registered on the Government site. Now, I know some people have had problems with this. I'll come back to that in a bit. If you think you're in the 1.5 million *extremely vulnerable person' category, even 2/
if you haven't yet had a letter/text from your GP/NHS trust, register here (you can check the box to state you haven't received letter yet.) 3/…

Love that we have seamlessly transitioned from "what do you mean, you need plastic straws to live because it's the only way you can drink? Think of the sea turtles!"

"What do you mean, you're immunocompromised and need a mask? Think of the Drs!"

The common denominator seems to be the idea that :

1. Disabled people are not reliable narrators of our own experiences, so we probably don't really *need* that thing to live

2. Even if we do, other lives are more important than disabled people's

[ableism, COVID-19]

Meanwhile, now that abled people are worried about surviving, it's suddenly okay again to use single use plastics

It's heroic, even! You're saving people's lives by reducing infection rates

you should hear the conversations.
ones I never thought we’d have
‘I will wait til I’m unconscious
and they won’t know I am disabled’
‘I think I can still walk in’
‘I’ll use another name’
‘no point me going in at all’
‘I’m saving up my pills.’#coronavirusau #HighRiskCovid19
2/ @MarkMcGowanMP just did a presser
didn’t talk about disabled people
just the cruise ship and the feds
not a word about testing our supports
not a word about us accessing testing
not any word at all.
We’re as erased as a cruise ship left to drift
frightened, off our shores.
3/ we are laughing still of course
but only just.
a ventilator dependent quad said to me
they say they have portable ventilators
does that include mine?
I couldn’t say yes, but yes it does
would they take it from me?
isolation meant I was glad
I couldn’t see the look in his eyes.

People are talking about "#HerdImmunity immunity." Do. You. Not. Understand.

With no vaccine, 60% of people have to be infected before herd immunity kicks in. 60% of the 2020 population of Australia (25,499,884) is 15,299,930 people. #coronavirusaustralia #auspol
2/ Some experts are saying it might be up to 90% of all ppl infected in order to achieve herd immunity, similar to measles. 1 in 7 Australians is over the age of 65.

4 million Australians w/disability and that is not even counting most chronically ill/sick people.
3/ Even if you do not care about disabled people and children who have chronic illnesses, maybe you could think about your parents and grandparents. If you need help with this, cut out their pictures, stick them inside your front door. Remember who you are putting in danger.

You know how you’re all staying home to protect seniors and disabled people?
Guess what they’re doing to help disabled people? You know, the ‘most vulnerable’? THE TRUTH - a thread. #auspol #NDIS #HighRiskCovid19 #coronavirusaustralia #coronavirus #CoronavirusLockdown #COVID19au
2/ The unions, Labor and NDS have negotiated for registered disability service providers to get a 10% loading fee - money taken out of our (already underfunded) funding plus an advance payment with a 10 day cancellation policy.
Most of our services have been cut or withdrawn.
3/ People are still being packed into sheltered workshops with 500 people in them, all over Australia. If they withdraw, they lose that funding because it’s a ‘stated support’. And their two dollar an hour wage. But respite centres and activities are closing down.

Hi, @realDonaldTrump

You should meet the Americans you’re sentencing to death when you suggest we stop practicing containment measures for the good of the economy.

This is Owen. He has allergies & chronic lung inflammation. He’s 14. And he deserves a better President than you.
Owen’s in the gifted program & is a freshman in high school. He wants to be a writer or an actor when he grows up. I hope he’ll get that chance.

I’m his mom, Kaz. I have a genetic disorder that can cause lung disease. I also have an 8 year old daughter.
@realDonaldTrump has concluded that some people will have to die. He’s willing to give up on our most vulnerable populations to save the stock market and the 1%.

I’m not giving up on Owen. I hope you won’t either.

Economies can recover.
Dead people can’t.

A thread on #coronavirus, vulnerability, and power

Disabled people know what it means to be vulnerable and interdependent. We are modern-day oracles. It’s time people listened to us. 1/x…

#HighRiskCovid19 #COVID19 #COVIDー19 #CripTheVote #SuckItAbleism Graphic with a black background and a photo of an Asian American woman in a power chair. She is wearing an orange-red jacket and black pants. She is wearing a mask over her nose attached to a gray tube and bright red lip color. Her hands are resting over her joystick. Even before the coronavirus pandemic, systems have always tried to kill and oppress marginalized people.

These crises and assaults reconfirm who is considered disposable and unworthy of assistance, resources, attention, and treatment. 2/x
This time feels different for me with the very real threats of health care rationing and shortage of ventilators for critically ill patients in the United States. 3x

Phone call from Home Help agency, they’re suspending their service, so I will no longer get help with cleaning, bed changing, cleaning bathroom, washing up. Don’t know how I’m going to cope. I’m also furious that they’re laying off all their part time staff #HighRiskCovid19
My home help has been coming for 7 years, suddenly she’s out of work. She’s a single Mum with 3 kids. What’s going to happen to her? #HighRiskCovid19
This is on top of other Carer not being able to come: no support. The same is the case for my very elderly parents, my Mum is very high risk with bronchiectasis & asthma, my Dad has Coeliac disease so can’t eat most ready meals, won’t get cleaning, bed changed #HighRiskCovid19

USA has a population of around 327 million with only 160,000 ventilators available.
We have much less.
Countries like Italy are struggling with case numbers surging, severity of disease and death as the outcome.
The ceiling of care is lowered as more and more people get sick.
Ceiling of care is a term used to describe the highest level of care a patient will receive.
Doctors are having to decide which patients have the BEST shot at a favourable outcome rather than death.
What this means is that resources are allocated to those who have the best shot.
Those who suffer from this will be the immunocompromised (diabetic, hx of cancer, those who have autoimmune disease, taking steroid medication those with HIV and those at extremes of age (babies and elderly).
This means that their chance of receiving active treatment is low.

Just because you're young doesn't mean you're immune to #COVIDー19.

🔹 #asthma & #diabetes make even young people #HighRisk for serious complications

1/3 #HighRiskCovid19 #SocialDistancingNow
Symptoms may be so mild for young people that THEY AREN'T NOTICED.

So people who DON'T KNOW they're infected & contagious go about normal activities & infect others: parents, grandparents, people with asthma, lung disease (ex: asthma), diabetes, etc. 2/3 #FlattenTheCurve
#SocialDistancing ISN'T JUST ABOUT YOU.

It's about EVERYONE in your community.

It's about making it safer FOR OTHERS.

Don't be a #carrier.

Don't send me to the hospital because I had to go get my prescriptions.

Don't infect your parents & grandparents. #StayTheFHome 3/3

My sister's symptomatic partner has removed himself from self-isolation because his work are firing people for following government advice. Literally this morning a colleague called in to say he has to self-isolate and he's been told not to come back.
They are all without protections. Tribunals/calling MSPs/naming and shaming won't do anything other than get him fired when it would be to their financial ruin. So many are in this position until the government acts.
He works on a construction site next to a hospital.

In New Rochelle, the U.S. has a small glimpse into that life under lockdown — where the app economy has dried up, and the food is delivered in rationed bags by a desperate mobilized force. For America, it will be the National Guard — not the cadres.
