6 days ago, results for the CA finals were announced in India.

To be brutally honest, the odds of winning admission to #Harvard are higher than clearing the CA exam in India (in one go).

A thread :
1. The exam takes years of persistence, and perseverance - and yet after clearing the exam - many switch careers or sectors (via civil services, or #MBA).

2. There are many exceptional CA aspirants who end up wasting their 20s appearing/reappearing for this exam unsuccessfully
3. There are many who sacrifice their college experience completely to prepare for this exam, only realizing years later the importance of learning skillsets beyond analyzing three accounting statements...

This MBA student from the US came for his summer vacation, with a plan to go back soon. But his dad sent him to Cochin to earn a living with 3 very stringent conditions.

1. He could only carry 3 pairs of clothes, and ₹7,000 (only for emergency use, not for expenses).
2. He could only work for a week at a place.

3. He could not reveal who he was.

Btw, the answer to the last part is that he is the son of a billionaire, Savji Dholakia, who owns a ₹6,000 crore diamond business.
The Surat-based business tycoon was in the news for gifting his 1200 employees with very jaw-dropping Diwali bonuses - including apartments and cars!

So, why such a harsh treatment for his son?

"I wanted him to understand life and how the poor struggle to get a job and money.

Planning to do an #MBA without having any work experience.
Don't do it!
It's a sheer waste of money, time and energy.
In any case, you don't need to learn to invest $70,000+ in case studies, symposiums and business seminars.
If you have that much money, better opt for a specialized qualification which leads to skill development, or why not start your own venture using rational common sense?
By the way, have you ever asked your business studies professor if he or she has ever worked for a day in any organization on a full-time basis?
Most of these top-notch business studies/management science scholars have little to no practical experiences to share.

Find My meldet als letzten Standort Mannheim Hbf. Ich rufe die @bpol_bw Mannheim an.

Scrutinized many MBA programmes, but seldom do I come across a course which teaches policy
A course titled "#Seminar in Business Policy" should be a capstone model taught to all #MBA Generalists.
Why business schools don't teach such courses as seminars or electives is beyond me?
Like where I have seen Business School Students suffer the most is when it comes to writing down a policy in their relevant area.
So, that is where consultants come in!
That makes matters worse.
Of course, #MBA is a professional qualification.
But, that does not imply professionals should have weak drafting skills.
Hence, for policy manuscripts, organizations turn to academicians or scholar-practitioners.
Business Pedagogics needs re-tooling, reskilling, & re-profiling.

Which is a better career option, an #MBA in finance or financial risk management?
I am not an admirer of the MBA Degree Program. So I think I should not be answering this question per se.

But, let me give it a try.
MBA is a professional qualification, unlike MA / MSc / MS / MPhil Degree programs.
How you will benefit from an MBA degree, is entirely up to your understanding of the challenges emerging in the workplace.
MBA Finance is neither a fish nor fowl qualification.
If you would like to learn financial theory, derivatives, risk and economics, you will be better off by doing a proper MS or MSc in Financial Economics or Applied Finance (Financial Engineering).

Different professions require distinct applied skill sets
1. Working as a #quality systems controller in the dairy industry, a degree in total quality management will not suffice alone!
You need to have some awards in veterinary sciences & nutrition sciences or food science/tech
2. Working in the Insurance Industry with just a degree in Actuarial Sciences cannot help per se.
The Actuarial Risk Aspirants must develop an understanding of #Insurance Underwriting Methods, Insurance Business Models, Insurance Law & Accounting, in addition to Maths and Stats.
3. The same holds true for those who graduate with qualifications in Financial Engineering or FINTECH, etc.
Students must develop an understanding of financial products, laws, exchanges, etc
Blindly applying quantitative models to events or observable data won't take you anywhere

Do business school professors need business experience?
Many #PhDs / #DBA's end up in teaching and/or academic business research.
Both are different areas.
For teaching, you have to have practical experiences that you are supposed to share with the classroom.
Many corporate world leaders are the most sought after when it comes to teaching business courses in an #MBA program!
Most of these corporate bigwigs don't have Doctorate degrees, but, even then, universities would like to bring them on board because they have an adequate amount of insights.

The biggest problem with the #MBA Degree is that it does not distinguish among Big Corporate, #Microenterprise or #SME - Small and Medium Enterprise Management Pedagogical Models and Curriculums.
What is the MBA program preparing you for?
A career in the Corporate World!
Period
Many universities are most certainly pedantically confused when it comes to approaching the generalist management education strand offered via the professional routes at their business school.
Enterprenuership, Leadership and MSME Streams are all being offered in addition to MBA.
The dilemma is one of misunderstanding the role of education and curriculum development to meet the requirements of a modern firm.
Educationists and Educational Technologists have not paid attention to business didactics as much as they should.

Is there really a purpose of having a PhD title, next to your name, if you cannot publish journal articles, write monographs or books, etc?
Why waste 3-7 years at some university?
Applied PhDs for enhancing work-related experiences are better for those who would like to only work?
I was giving advice to one student who had an #MBA.
He got rejected by all the leading universities in the UK, and the USA that offered doctoral research programmes because of his quantitative background.
The reason cited was that professional degrees are not fit for purpose.
Your best choice after doing an #MBA would be a #DBA.
That too, after gaining traction, concerning subject expertise at the workplace for several years.
DO NOT directly enter into a DBA!!
That will be a travesty.

Always do study at a university which has an influential alumnus.
Networking helps more than anything else when you are looking for a job or an opportunity to undertake a startup.
Please, be mindful of the fact that degree is just a decorative sketch framed for the walls.
Listening to a speech given by Late #Lee #Kuan Yew,
where he was advising undergrads about the paths they should pursue in 1994.
For Mr Lee, the #Oxbridge epoch was well over back in the 90s.
The #Yanks and their universities dominate the global corporate world and job networks.
The most interesting aspect of this speech made by then Minister Mentor Lee was that he encouraged Far-Eastern Asian Students such as the Singaporeans to do a first degree in Electrical Engineering and later back it up with an Ivy League #MBA.
What superb advice it was!

Most of the #MBA Finance students who attended my masterclass in Investments and Portfolio Management did not know how to use the #VLOOKUP or #VLOOKDOWN XLS Functions
Most of them completed graded courses in CS.
And then students complain about the standard of business education?
Not only that!
Most of the MBAs specializing in Finance that apply for Industrial Placement Programs or internships, struggle to read and understand financial statements.
Does that surprise you?
Not me!
Because Finance Majors are not necessarily good at using #Accounting or #IFRS
I am dead against an MBA Finance Degree.
its neither fish nor fowl
You cannot become a Financial Planner only by reading business case studies or solving a few exercises or writing project reports using standard formats
Better opt for an MS or MSc in Finance with a focus on Maths

Top-Down Vs. Bottom-Up Style of Investment Analysis: Risk Versus Research Desk Perspectives
@GARP_Risk @CFAinstitute @CQFInstitute
In the field of Investment Risk and Research Analyses, the research/risk analyst has to make a choice between two asset selection and/or allocation approaches.
The first approach is referred to as the “Top-Down Analysis” and the second is its opposite, the “Bottom-Up Analysis”.

How is the London Business School MBA degree valued in the United States?
@LBS
Let me answer this question based on what I have heard from my friends and acquaintances.

British Universities don't go far in creating an impression in Business and Management Science subjects in the USA in particular! that is a fact.
There is this general impression in the USA and abroad that the best business schools are American Business Schools.

Why? Historical Perspective….

What are new graduates doing to be attractive to banks entry-level analyst programs?
@ABABankers @TheBanker @CIOonline @RiskDotNet @FT
Interesting question.
Banking sector MTO - Management Trainee Officers Program vary from country to country.
In my country Bank Staff Colleges train young graduates to become bankers.
The hired graduates have to undergo an intensive training course by attending several In-house boot camps or lecture hall workshops before they are moved into the formal workplace.

What are the advantages when we compare Quantitative Finance and Quantitative Economics? How likely can a quantitative economics student find a job in the industry compared to quantitative finance?
@ecmaEditors @economics @CQFInstitute @LSEeconomics
Both are different Pathways leading to different roles in the economy!

•QF - Quantitative Finance will make you more employable in the financial services industry and across (Financial Risk, ERM, Insurance, Actuarial Finance and Derivative Modelling) consulting sectors.
•QE - Quantitative Economics will enhance your chances of getting hired across the research arms of the financial services industry or the (Civil services) bureaucracy, & /or it further enables you to do a PhD in Mathematical Economics / Econometrics, etc.

How can I start a career in #risk management in the financial services industry?
@GARP_Risk @PRMIA @RIMSorg @actuarynews @SOActuaries @CQFInstitute @CFAinstitute
I believe they are many degrees that can be a good value for money, provided you know where you would like to work in the long run.
In the developing world markets, employers still don't appreciate highly technical education in risk, actuarial sciences, financial engineering, quantitative economics, machine learning, etc.

For them, an #MBA is a be-all and an end-all troubleshooter.

My ongoing career dilemma is as follows:

Many people tell me to be less perfectionist or aim lower.

However, a plethora of data reveal there are different standards for different people for gatekeeping/recognition of merit.

I don’t feel comfortable fudging. Others do, tho.
First, I wonder if everybody is given this advice that they should aim lower & have lower standards?

Seeking to do something different than the status quo or “realistic” is generally considered #leadership and #innovation.

Why not push boundaries?

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…
For many populations

our pushing the boundaries is the only way they get out of “the margins” or are no longer outside the walls

physical walls
policy walls
payment walls
definitions
access
etc

Those of us w/ identities not mainstream or of marginalized populations see it
