We offer condolences to #AltonSterling 's loved ones on the anniversary of his death. A father of five, Alton Sterling was killed two years ago.
The officer who fatally shot Mr. Sterling was fired in March, after 20 months of paid leave. The other officer received a 3-day suspension. These were the first consequences of any kind they faced; officials failed to bring criminal charges against them. nytimes.com/2018/03/30/us/…
The footage of Mr. Sterling’s death makes painfully clear the numerous ways that the officers needlessly ended a man’s life. At LDF, we work every day to reform police departments across the country and honor #AltonSterling's memory. #SayHisName

This bill to change the California police deadly force standard is the most important legislation to address police violence in America right now. cnn.com/2018/04/03/us/…
The first part of the bill limits deadly force to cases “where necessary” after all reasonable alternatives are exhausted. There are currently 4 states with similar (but not as strong) laws in place: DE, IA, TN and RI. They have 20% fewer killings by police than other states.
Police departments that have adopted this standard in their use of force policies (even where it’s not required by state law) have 25% fewer killings by police. Significant.

Let’s take a moment to examine how insanely biased the Louisiana Attorney General’s full report on the #AltonSterling case is. A thread. scribd.com/document/37496…
There’s a whole section on Sterling’s “History with Law Enforcement” which they say “reflects his failure to submit to lawful arrest while he was armed with a dangerous weapon.” They didn’t include anything about the officers who killed him. So let’s do some digging...
Both of the officers who killed #AltonSterling had a history of violence against black men. Why wasn’t any of this included given they are the suspects in this homicide investigation? joincampaignzero.org/s/Campaign-Zer…

A group of Black students from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High called a press conference today to say they have concerns that may not mirror those of their white peers. And that the media should listen. #MSDStrong
Kai says while some might feel comfort to have more police officers at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, he does not. He says it's intimidating & that black students will face most of the consequences of an overmilitarized predominantly white school.
Tyah-Amoy a Marjorie Stoneman Douglas student said conversations about gun violence have to include police violence. She asked, the same people who showed up for #MarchForOurLives--will they show up for #StephonClark? #AltonSterling? #SandraBland?
