Got leaky gut and worried about Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) causing an immune response that leads to systemic inflammation? Well you should be! But let's talk about what a ketogenic diet can do to mitigate that for you. Shall we? 🧵(1/21)
A #leakygut is a condition in which the lining of the intestine becomes damaged or compromised, allowing toxins, undigested food particles, and harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream. (2/21)
When this happens, large amounts of LPS (lipopolysaccharide) can be released into the bloodstream, triggering an #immune response and #inflammation in the body. (3/21)

Bacteriophages can be robustly detected in microbiome samples like feces or skin swabs. But identifying latent viruses remains a challenge, as they can slumber as episomes or integrated within cells and tissues without actively replicating.
As these viruses are intracellular they are not restricted to body's outer surfaces where most other microbiotas dwell.

How is the #metagenome in Norwegian wild Atlantic #salmon as a case? In one word - surprising!

Here is a thread! (1/10)
We have used genome-resolving metagenomics to discover some wild and surprising interactions
between 🐟 and 🦠 in Atlantic salmon featured in @ISME_microbes
Please have a read: rdcu.be/c5Pny (2/10)
The first surprise we encountered was the simplicity of the microbiome of wild salmon! One 🦠 ruled over all the others no matter the sampling location - despite this being across 700 Km! (3/10)

🚨New paper in @Nature reveals link between #microbiome & #exercise motivation!🧠🐁

2/ The study in question is a mouse study, as you can really perform these fine mechanistic study in animal models

Data show that genetics variation among mice was a minor contributor and the variations in microbiome composition were more important for physical performance...
3/ To show the microbiome mediates the effects, they knocked out the microbiome with antibiotics in high-performer mice and the result was an impairment physical performance by 50%! (2a)

By contrast, microbiome transplant could enhance performance.

The Effect of #Glyphosate on the #Gutmicrobiome and Neurocognitive Function
sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
1/5 Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the herbicide #RoundUp. In 1996 #geneticallymodified soybeans that could tolerate Round Up were introduced. At that time, Round Up made up just 3.8% of herbicides in use. By 2007 glyphosate use was more than double the next herbicide.
2/5 Glyphosate blocks an enzyme used by plants, bacteria, fungi, and algae, including beneficial bacteria in our #gut. Pathogenic bacteria Clostridia and Salmonella are not affected by glyphosate, allowing them to survive.

Have you ever wished to sequence SPECIFIC bacteria but NOT the vast background in #microbiome? Today, we introduce *mEnrich-seq*: #methylation-guided enrichment sequencing of bacterial taxa of interest from microbiome. 4yr project led by @clannabel7! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…🧵1/10
#Metagenomic sequencing throughput is largely consumed by abundant microbes while those with relatively lower abundance cannot be sequenced in a cost-effective manner, due to the highly skewed abundance distribution of diverse bacteria and host DNA. 2/10
Although several methods have been developed (pls see Introduction in preprint) to exclude host DNA and/or the highly abundant microbes, there are still key challenges in achieving high enrichment efficiency and differentiating between bacterial taxa w/ very similar genomes. 3/10

Cocaine and other psychostimulants act by blocking catecholamine reuptake. Citrobacter rodentium is a mouse γ-Proteobacteria that can sense host norepinephrine to colonize the gut, inducing dysbiosis.

"Individuals exposed to multiple drugs, polypharmacy, showed distinct gut microbiome structures harboring significantly more abundant upper gastrointestinal species and several nosocomial pathobionts due to additive drug effects."
"Polypharmacy was also associated with microbial functions, including the reduction of short-chain fatty acid metabolism and increased bacterial stress responses."

Sometimes something so cool comes out I can't wait until a Live Brain Fog Recovery Program Lesson to share some of the scientific reasons for doing the program! So here it goes... 🧵
In a recent study on the diet-microbiome-gut-brain nexus in acute and chronic brain injury, findings have shown that the microbiome is affected by neurodegenerative conditions and brain injury states.
While the specific changes to the microbiomes of people suffering from different neurological disorders vary, there is a theme seen in both acute and chronic brain injury. And that theme is that pathogenic and opportunistic bacteria increase and beneficial flora becomes depleted.
