Eurozone: Merkel with commitment to banking & capital markets union; intergovernmentally controlled EMF with shorter & longer-term credit lines; "lower double digit € bn" investment budget for Eurozone;
Merkel for "open" & "respectful" engagement with new Italian government.
migration/asylum: Merkel against another qualified majority decision on mandatory quota for distribution of asylum seekers ("quota of 160.000 did not contribute to political pacification"); favors "flexible system of sharing of responsibilities" on border security, intake etc).
Merkel: "I am positive on Macron's proposal of European intervention initiative". "Should be closely aligned with PESCO" & open to the UK; on-permanent seats on Security Council seat should become European seats; suggests "European Security Council with rotating membership".

Interviewers allowed Merkel to get away w/o saying how much she is willing to go with challenging German public on defense plus on how to deal with illiberal state projects in HUN & Poland within EU context (also budget conditionality).

Remarkable interview by Siemens CEO @JoeKaeser on Kuka & Chinese investments: "Chinese go into companies, give guarantees. It's quiet for a while. Then new company founded that integrates existing firm. R&D relocated. This also seems to be case with Kuka".

Kaeser says Siemens tried to buy Kuka but "we couldn`t convince owners. I couldn´t have justified price of 4 billion EURO". With no appropriate foreign investment law in place in 2016, Chinese investor was able to acquire key tech company by willingness to pay inflated price.
Now Siemens now wants to build up its own robotics division: "Many customers turn away from Kuka since they don't want to make themselves dependent on a company that got into different hands".

#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

Some thoughts on #Merkel, what happens next in EU/German politics & her legacy.

1. First off, she will remain as Chancellor for now. She will not seek re-election as Chairperson the CDU in Dec. But this prepares the scene for a fast-track exit only a few months into her new term
2. After the national election of 2017 in which both the SPD and CDU/CSU did terribly - the question of whether or not Merkel would serve the entirely of her fourth term was open. She was weakened tremendously by the last election result. So this is not unexpected.
3. Even more so when you consider that Merkel has been the Chairperson of the CDU since 2000, and served as Chancellor in 2005 (won 4 times.)

2/ Is "incremental" a dirty word? No. But to most people it #feels less exciting & flashy than "#disruptive." Yes, I said #feels. Bc most ppl probably will not read Ivy's excellent article or this tweetstorm bc they're not on Twitter. To them all this sounds/#feels like jargon.

How embarrassing for #Merkel that EU divisions over #migration policies - where some European governments or government ministers prefer to go it alone rather than to find a common EU position - is being played out - in neon-lit glaring headlines - in her own administration 1
#Merkel has always pushed for EU-wide migration solutions (though she took a rather large unilateral decision herself back in 2015 when she opened the doors to over a million asylum-seekers, in defiance of EU regulations) 2
Those regulations stipulate that irregular migrants must be processed in the first EU country they arrive in- but #Merkel argued that no-one was looking after or documenting them (remember the chaos in Greece and Hungary?) 3
